Notes: Methods for expressing, measuring, and correlating drop-size distribution data for centrifugal spray nozzles are discussed.A method for collecting spray droplets in liquid nitrogen is described which is rapid and efficient for most sprayed liquids which freeze above  - 20°C. Comprehensive correlations for drop-size distributions are reported based on 114 runs performed with the liquid nitogen method.

Notes: The foam separation process uses differences in surface activity to separate components of a solution. Stable foams can flow upward countercurrent to liquid to give countercurrent differential separations with stripping, enrichment, or scrubbing similar to solvent extraction.Six- and 24-in. I.D. foam columns were operated with sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate solutions to measure height of transfer unit (HTU) values and foam densities and to develop satisfactory gas spargers, liquid feed distributors, foam drainage conditions, and foam condensation equipment. The HTU values for stripping of Sr-89 were about 1 cm. for the best conditions of uniform foams, liquid flows of 100 gal./sq.ft.hr. or less, and uniform liquid feed distribution with low inlet velocities. Variations of countercurrent column lengths within 10 to 28 cm. caused little variation in HTU values. The foams were condensed, with four types of pneumatic or mechanical foam breakers used. A pilot plant was designed for decontamination of a low level radioactive waste.

Notes: Observations of microcirculatory blood flow in the wing membrane of the unanesthetized bat, Myotis leucifugus, show that many responses associated with the exposure of blood to foreign surfaces mimic normal behavior in these sites. The responses include leukocyte pavement formation, permeability changes, thrombus formation, and intravascular fibrin threads. Attempts to eliminate or suppress these reactions should recognize that they are latent normal physiological activities.

Notes: Ring-opening polymerization of 5,6-dideoxy-5,6-epithio-1,2-O-isopropylidene-α-L-idofuranose is catalyzed by boron trifluoride at 60°C. Soluble polymer is produced at monomer: catalyst ratio of 7 : 1 and monomer concentration 0.077M after 1 1-hr. polymerization period. This polymer has a wide molecular weight distribution. A number-average molecular weight of 72,000 is found for the first 40% of the polymer precipitated from a N,N-dimethylformamide solution by the addition of water. Polymer is produced in increasing amounts as temperature is raised, catalyst concentration increased, and as water concentration is decreased. Transglycosylation may be the cause of branch formation or crosslinking. Hydrolysis of the soluble polymer removes isopropylidene groups to produce a water soluble reducing polymer which oxidizes with hypoiodite to a polymer containing carboxyl groups.

Notes: A new method for preparing D-glucose polymers is described. Isopropylidene derivatives of D-glucofuranose, particularly the 1,2-mono-O-derivative, are treated with Lewis acids, such as boron trifluoride, to eliminate acetone and produce a highly branched polymer with a molecular weight of 12,700. Approximately one isopropylidene unit remains, possibly on the potential reducing end of the glucan. Up to 95% of the polymer units are D-glucopyranoside units indicating that ring expansion occurs during the condensation.
