Notes: Experiments have been carried out to measure the permeation of tritium-labeled toluene through polyethylene films fully swollen with chlorobenzene, mesitylene, cumene, toluene, ethylbenzene, cyclohexane, tetrahydronaphthalene, and decahydronaphthalene. The results show characteristic Arrhenius temperature dependence over the range 25 to 40°C. The permeation of toluene through the films appears to be enhanced by increased solubility of the swelling agent (estimated from the work of others) in the film and there also appears to be a rough correlation between permeability of toluene and the boiling points and vapor pressures of the swelling agents. The range of permeabilities measured at 25°C. is 2.09 × 10-7 to 0.51 × 10-7 sq.cm./sec., the extremes of measured permeation activation energy, Ep, are 11.41 to 16.68 kcal./mole, and the pre-exponential factor, Po, falls within the interval 36.59 to 1.29 × 105 sq.cm./sec. A very definite linear relationship or compensation effect is evident between Po and Ep. Except as mentioned above, none of these quantities appears to correlate uniformly with the following properties of swelling solvent: molecular weight, dipole moment, specific gravity, vapor pressure, boiling point, heat of vaporization, critical temperature, viscosity, surface tension, molar volume, molecular area or other molecular dimensions.

Notes: The cytoplasm of the dogfish (Mustelus canis) thrombocyte was found to contain microtubules. The tubules which measured 230 Å in diameter appeared singly and in groups. They were found in all parts of the cytoplasm but usually close to the perinuclear area. Similar arrangements of tubules were observed in eosinophils and hemoblasts, but not in the mature, smaller lymphocytes. The orientations of the perinuclear bundles frequently reflected the shape of the nuclei, appearing in furrows, indentations, and between lobes.

Notes: Untreated and fire-retardant-treated white α-cellulose samples were isothermally pyrolyzed in a fluidized bath in a nitrogen environment at 298-360°C. Results were reported in terms of volatilization (based on weight loss-time measurements) and the degradation products (based on gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis). The findings products (based on gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis). The findings on untreated cellulose indicate that: (1) pyrolysis occurs in three distinct phases in the temperature range 276-360°C; (2) there is a single activation energy of 42 kcal/mole over this temperature range; (3) the initial rapid weight loss is not due to the desoprtion of water, but primarily to decomposition of the cellulose; molecules: (4) there is little difference in either the quality or relative quantity of the volatiles generated during the three different phases of pyrolysis. The findings on treated cellulose show that the fire retardant, KHCO3, does not markedly change the types of degradation products having molecular weights below about 110, althought it does change their relative concentrations. Furthermore, the rate of product generation and the quantity of residual char are increased.

Notes: Sectioned as well as negatively stained preparations of developing myotomal cells from the chick embryo were studied with the electron microscope. The application of these two techniques to similar material made it possible to observe developing muscle cells in successive stages of differentiation and at the same time visualize some of the isolated components making up these cells. The thick and thin filaments observed in the embryonic muscle were morphologically indistinguishable from those observed in adult muscle. The thin filaments, found randomly dispersed in the cytoplasm of the early cells, were present in large concentrations before the first appearance of thick filaments. The first observed thick filaments had lengths of 1.5 μ, equal to that of adult thick filaments. The appearance of large polyribosomes was correlated with the first appearance of the thick filaments. Single and small groups of ribosomes were always present. Early formed thick and thin filament aggregates were found in the same hexagonal array that is typical to the organization of myofilaments in adult myofibrils. Non-striated myofibrils, associated with a periodic transverse tubular system, were found before striated myofibrils could be observed. Some preliminary observations were made concerning the appearance of glycogen particles.

Notes: With electron microscopy it was observed that ferritin antigen was taken up in pinocytotic vesicles by the reticular cells. No antigen was observed in lymphocytes, in immature or mature plasma cells after primary and secondary stimulation, or after hyperstimulation. In hyperstimulated tissue a larger number of more complex vesicles containing ferritin were visible, more ferritin was found free in the cytoplasm and a larger number of multiple-membraned figures were present.Hyperstimulation led to the appearance of activated fixed reticular cells which were characterized by cytoplasm containing a rich endoplasmic reticulum with dilated cisternae and ferritin both free and in vesicles. The activated fixed reticular cells therefore contain antigenic ferritin and have the characteristics of cells engaged in protein synthesis.Using fluorescent antibody staining no antigenic material was detectable in the antibody producing plasma cell; therefore if antigen fragments not identifiable in electron microscopy are present they are in a form not available for antibody staining. Gamma-globulin was not detectable in the activated reticular cell. It may be necessary for the intact antigen to be completely modified and for the cell to lose its fixed position before γ-globulin synthesis can begin.

Notes: The crosslinking and degradation of seven polyacrylates by 1000 kvp. electrons has been investigated. Gel content-radiation dose analysis reveals the energy dissipation per main-chain fracture, Ed, to be the same (530 ± 100 electron volts) for methyl, n-butyl, sec-butyl, isobutyl, and tert-butyl acrylate polymers. The energy dissipation per crosslinked unit formation, Ec, is 80-90 e.v. for methyl, n-butyl, isobutyl and neopentyl acrylate polymers. Ec may be slightly higher for poly-sec-butyl acrylate. Poly-tert-butyl acrylate possesses a uniquely high Ec of 300 e.v. The presence of hydrogen atoms alpha to the alcoholic oxygen of the ester group is believed to contribute strongly to the crosslinking reactions of polyacrylates under ionizing radiations. Poly-1,1-dihydroperfluorobutyl acrylate exhibits an initial Ec of ∼45 e.v. and an Ed of ∼450 e.v. Beyond 15 megareps the ration of main-chain fracture to crosslink formation increases.

Notes: A series of seven vinyl esters of perfluoro acids has been prepared by the mercury catalyzed reaction of the acids with acetylene. Certain physical properties of the monomers are given. Homopolymers gave clear, flexible films with the exception of vinyl caprylate and caprate, which formed waxy films. Copolymerization of vinyl perfluorobutyrate proceeded readily with vinyl acetate and methyl methacrylate, but less readily with styrene, maleic anhydride, and acrylonitrile.
