Description / Table of Contents: Summary By means of the silvercarbonate-method (Jabonero) a closed syncytial network of vegetative plasma strains with nuclei can be demonstrated around the apocrine glands. This network originates from amyelinated nerves or plasma strains accompanying the blood vessels. A plasmatic connection with the secretory and myoepithelial cells can not be proved. The neurofibrils never leave the nervous plasma bands in order to innervate non-nervous elements. In general, the vegetative terminal network is more sparsely distributed around the apocrine glands than around the eccrine glands. On account of the morphology and the fact that the nervous bands never could be found entering the non-nervous elements of the apocrine glands, a humoral transmission of the nervous impulse can be postulated. Histochemical examinations for specific cholinesterase in the nervous terminal network reveal that in contrary to the eccrine sweat glands only relatively few plasma bands around the apocrine glands contain specific cholinesterase. On behalf of the findings the theory of cholinergic innervation of the apocrine glands seems unlikely compared the well-proved theory of adrenergic innervation.
