Notes: [Auszug] Streptolysin O is the homolysin liberated by group A streptococci. The lysin is antigenic, and infection with group A streptococci results in the production of specific neutralizing antibodies; that is, antistreptolysin O. The antibodies appear in the serum from 1 week to 1 month after the onset of ...

Notes: [Auszug] Taste tests for quinine and for 6-n-propyl thiouracil were administered twice during one day to each of fourteen volunteers (nine females and five males), once immediately before eating lunch and again immediately after eating lunch. Table 1 lists the taste threshold numbers and associated molarity ...

Notes: [Auszug] Taste thresholds (that is, the lowest concentrations of the compounds which could be distinguished from water) were measured by the method of Harris and Kalmus6 as modified by Fischer et al.4 The method involved the separation by taste of sets of eight cups, four of solution and four of distilled ...

Notes: [Auszug] Human lymphocytes which, are essentially free from other cells have been prepared from peripheral blood. Storage for long periods at −196° C is possible without serious loss in viability. Labelling with chromium-51 enables such cells to be used in a precise serological assay with human ...

The term HL-A substances will be used to describe these inhibitors. Although their immunogenicity is unknown so far, they have undoubted ...

Notes: Summary Five feeding experiments to investigate the aetiology of ‘Manchester Wasting Disease’ showed that lesions could be produced by exaggerated dietary mineral imbalances if both calcium and vitamin D were in oversupply and especially when a state of magnesium deprivation also obtained. This supports the conclusion that in the naturally occurring disease a substance with vitamin D-like activity must be derived from extraneous sources such as herbage and accentuates a calcium/magnesium/phosphorus imbalance.
