Notes: The discrete-time, time-optimal control of high-order, linear systems with bounded controls is formulated as a problem in linear programming. The solution obtained requires a certain minimum number of controls to be on their bounds. Numerical results are obtained for a system with controls bounded on one and both sides and extensions indicated for state variable constraints. The method proves to be extremely fast and simple to solve on a high-speed digital computer.

Notes: Five different variations on the basic quasilinearization algorithm for optional control are applied to a six-variable nonlinear gas absorber system. Convergence of the algorithms to the optimal trajectory with better than 1% accuracy is achieved in less than ten iterations. The region of initial starting points which yield convergence is quite large. The main difficulty encountered is due to instabilities of the maximum principle equations. This limitation is, however, not severe and it is possible to predict a priori when the difficulty will occur. It is concluded that quasilinearization is a feasible algorithm for the optimization of nonlinear unconstrained systems.

Notes: Liapunov's direct method is extended to determine the stability of distributed systems with single and multiple equilibrium profiles. The method is simple to apply and makes use of certain inequalities to establish the sign definiteness of the time derivative of the Liapunov functional. Two numerical examples are presented, the adiabatic catalyst particle and an empty adiabatic tubular reactor with axial diffusion.

Notes: An analysis of the stability of a packed-bed reactor is presented subject to a model including axial and radial gradients in the interparticle field and gradients plus reaction in the intraparticle field. The stability of the entire reactor is characterized in terms of various stable and unstable conditions inside the porous particles. Simplifications in the mathematical model are shown to be invalid in many situations.

Notes: The present work is concerned with an experimental study of the influence of mass transfer on the holdup of countercurrent liquid-liquid fluidized systems and the effect of solute on droplet coalescence. Of particular importance in the results obtained is the dramatic demonstration that mass transfer greatly influences the holdup when solute is being extracted from the discontinuous phase loading to strong coalescence.

Notes: Integral conversion catalytic data have been studied by nonlinear estimation to determine whether the Langmuir-Hinshelwood heterogeneous catalytic models are more valid than the simpler homogeneous noncatalytic forms, and whether it is possible to discriminate among models. The experimental system chosen for this study was the vapor phase dehydration of ethanol. Data for a similar hypothetical catalytic system were also generated and analyzed to highlight the effects arising in the ethanol dehydration case.Nonlinear estimation is shown to be a valuable adjunct in the study of reaction kinetics and mechanism. For the hypothetical system, the correct model was found to provide the best fit to the data. Linear regression, coupled with the usual criterion that models are acceptable if all parameter estimates are positive, did not provide this discrimination. For the experimental system of ethanol dehydration, as corroborated by the hypothetical system, such problems as degeneracy of the heterogeneous rate equations and comparatively large errors in measurement are shown to be obscuring factors in determining the best model. When these effects are involved, it is doubtful that the Langmuir-Hinshelwood equations are more warranted than the simpler homogeneous forms.
