Notes: Abstract Using a unique fiber-growth control mechanism and high-reaction pressures (〉1 bar), silicon fibers were grown by laser-assisted chemical vapor deposition (LCVD) from silane near the focal point of a cw Nd:YAG laser beam. Fiber-growth rates ranged from 〈1 to 500 μm/s and fiber tip temperatures from 525 to 1412° C. At low fibertip temperatures (〈600° C) silicon fibers yielding glassy fracture were obtained. Some crystallinity was observed by X-ray diffraction. Polycrystalline silicon fibers were formed at intermediate temperatures, single-crystal silicon fibers at high-laser intensities and high-tip temperatures. The single crystal LCVD silicon fibers were formed by a vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism. Single-crystal VLS-LCVD silicon fibers were also obtained from liquid silicon-metal alloys by initiating fiber growth from the end of thin palladium, gold and platinum wires.

Notes: Commercial films, elastomers, and fibers have valuable in-use properties below 300°C. Astronautic requirements, however, may evaentually call for materials that withstand 500 hrs at 300°C or 100 hrs at 500°C while fully retaining their useful properties. The most significant advances in the synthesis and preparation of heat resistant polymer have been made since 1959 with new synthetic methods such as interfacial polymerization, cyclopolymerization, and intramolecular polymer post-cyclopolymerization, and intramolecular olymer post-cyclization reactions. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the structural relationships among those heat resistant, orgainc polymers that were reported to give strong films and fibers. Those heat resistant polymers, which have not yet been fabricated into films and fibers are not included in this review.

Notes: Thirteen aliphatic and aromatic polyhydrazides have been converted as bulk polymer by a unique polymer by a unique polymer post reaction into high molecular weight poly(1,3,4-oxadiazoles). This reaction proceeds by thermal cyclodehydration at 170-280°C. with elimination of water. The resulting poly(1,3,4-oxadiazoles) have been characterized by microanalysis, inherent viscosity, x-ray diffraction patterns, and by infrared and ultraviolet absorption spectra. Films could be pressed from the melt of polyoxadiazoles melting below 350°C., while very high melting or infusible aromatic polyoxadiazoles could not be manufactures into films and fibers by conventional means. Such polymers are extremely thermally and oxidatively stable and decompose between 450 and 500°C.

Notes: Poly(3,4-isophthaloyl-1,3,4-oxadiazolidine) was prepared from poly(isophthalic dihydrazide) by treatment by reaction with formic acid in dimethylsulfoxide as high-molecular weight film-forming polymer. Under thermal treatment with the evolution of formaldehyde and water, high yields of chemically pure poly[1,3-phenylene-2,5-(1,3,4-oxadiazole)] were obtained.
