Notes: Summary A comprehensive investigation has been made of the electrolyte coagulation behavior of a commercial styrene-butadiene rubber latex stabilized with the potassium salt of disproportionated rosin. Comparison of the coagulation characteristics of this system with the well defined silver halide sols using various + 1, + 2 and + 3 counterions has revealed many similarities in colloidal properties. From studies of the early stages of coagulation and electrophoresis measurements on the latex containing various amounts of electrolytes, it was possible to calculate several quantities of theoretical significance. These included theHamaker constant, theStern potential, the surface charge density, and the distance of the plane of shear from the outer edge of theStern layer.

Notes: Summary This work describes the dialysis, the determination of the total soap content in the latex system by conductometric titration, the effect of dilution on soap distribution between the aqueous and polymer phases, the confirmation of the average diameter of the latex particles, the electrophoretic behavior, and the establishment of the solids content below which the latex behaves according toBeer's law for the transmission of light. The colloidal system used in this study was a styrenebutadiene (∼ 1∶1) latex (Naugatex 2740) with potassium salt of the disproportionated rosin (Dresinate 214) as emulsifier.

Notes: Summary The coagulation and reversal of charge of a styrenebutadiene rubber latex (Naugatex 2740) by freshly prepared and aged aluminum nitrate solutions has been studied as a function of pH. The entire “[Al(NO3)3]-pH” and “[Al2(SO4)3]-pH” domains have been established giving the regions of uncoagulated and coagulated latex, as well as the stabilization region due to charge reversal. The results are similar to those obtained earlier with silver halide sols. Some differences are apparently due to interactions of hydrolyzed aluminum ions with the stabilizing agent, Dresinate 214. This work represents another confirmation of previous findings that the critical coagulation concentrations of a metal counterion varies as a consequence of the change in charge due to hydrolysis. It also shows that only hydrolyzed metal ions may adsorb in amounts sufficient to cause charge reversal.
