Notes: Abstract The paper deals with the measurement of the radial distribution of electron densityN(r) in a plasma cylinder made with the aid of a multibeam microwave interferometer. It analyses the properties of focused beams and the demands on the interferometer, and describes a method by which one can compute the radial distribution of electron densityN(r) from the measured values. A curve ofN(r) experimentally determined with the aid of a four-beam 8 mm interferometer is compared with that obtained by Langmuir probe measurements. The shape of the curve ascertained with the microwave technique, is in very good agreement with that of probe measurements. The difference in absolute values of the measured densities is less than 50%.

Notes: Abstract The paper deals with the calculation of the electric field strength distribution of a circular antenna focused in the Fresnel zone. To express the electric field strength distribution n W v−1 (w, x) functions defined by Lommel functions of two variables are used. On the basis of the calculated electric field strength distribution the fundamental properties of an antenna focused in the Fresnel zone are determined. The width and depth of the focused beam are calculated and the results of the numerical computations are plotted. Formulae for determining the wavelengths in the focused beam are expressed as a function of the circular aperture illumination.

Notes: Abstract The properties of an extensive reflex discharge of large power with one heated and one cold cathode in a magnetic field of 10 to 1500 Gauss were measured. At a neutral hydrogen pressure of 10−4 to 10−3 torr a plasma column was obtained which was 100 cm long, 10 cm in diameter and had a density greater than 10−11 cm−3. The dependence of the radial profile of the potential in the plasma was measured by a heated probe, and the temperature and electron density by Langmuir probes calibrated by a microwave interferometer. The dependence of the origin of low-frequency rotational instability on the parameters of the discharge was studied and the measured critical magnetic field was compared with theory. Apart from this low-frequency instability, intensive oscillations were also found in the discharge current in a frequency band up to 30 MHz, and the dependence of their spectrum on the magnetic field was measured.

Notes: Abstract The paper deals with a comparison of the measurement of the electron density of a plasmatic cylinder in a weak magnetic field (radius of cyclotron rotation of ionsr Hi is larger than radius of probea) parallel to the axis of the plasma by means of a cylindrical Langmuir probe and a microwave interferometer in the X band. A Langmuir probe is used to measure the electron density distribution across the cross-section of the plasmatic cylinder, i.e. in the plane perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder. The measured density distribution is used to determine the mean electron density over the cylinder cross-section. This mean electron density is compared with the density found with a microwave interferometer. In evaluating the measurements the concentration of the microwave energy through the antennas of the interferometer in the cross-section of the plasmatic cylinder is considered. The difference of the mean electron density found by the microwave method from the mean density found by the probe method was in the least favourable case 30%. In conclusion, the paper gives a comparison of the probe and microwave measurements of the plasma density in a stronger magnetic field, whenr Hi ≧a.

Notes: Abstract An analysis is presented of the possibilites of focusing the microwave energy by means of a magnetoactive plasma. The basic parameters of a plasma lens are calculated, and the way a magnetoactive plasma may be used in the making of lenses with a variable focal length is pointed out.
