Notes: Summary A two bulb glass apparatus was used to measure the concentration diffusion coefficient of the binary gas systems He-Ar and Ne-Kr. The coefficients were determined for equimolar mixtures at temperatures between 0°C and 70°C. The diffusion was followed as a function of time by withdrawing samples and analyzing them in a specially designed thermal conductivity analyzer with high accuracy. The diffusion coefficients agree with earlier reported experimental values and with those obtained on the basis of the Chapman-Enskog theory in conjunction with the modified Buckingham exp-six and Lennard-Jones (12-6) intermolecular potentials. The smoothed values were used to predict viscosity and thermal conductivity of these mixtures as a function of composition and temperature.

Notes: Summary An approximate method, an empirical one, a semi theoretical one, and the procedure due to Lindsay and Bromley are examined for prediction of thermal conductivity of polar-nonpolar gas mixtures. With a modification of the approximate method we find, by analyzing experimental and calculated results of twelve different systems, that prediction of thermal conductivity is possible with an uncertainty of about 2%. This is important because experimental data on such gas systems are rare. The methods also permit computation of thermal conductivity at moderately high temperatures and for multicomponent mixtures.

Notes: Summary An effort is made to put the recently derived expression of multicomponent thermal conductivity of polyatomic gases by Saxena, Saksena, Gambhir and Gandhi in the familiar well-known Wassiljewa form. It is shown that this representation for the thermal conductivity coefficient is possible only when the pure thermal conductivity is replaced by a newly defined effective thermal conductivity,λ eff. The two are interconnected and this relationship is critically examined.

Notes: Summary The rigorous binary viscosity expression ηmix as transformed to the form originally suggested by Sutherland is studied for mixtures involving polar gases. Any attempt to simplify the ϕ ij of the Sutherland viscosity expression turns out to be only approximately successful. A relation for ϕ ij /ϕ ji is however derived, and the procedure suggested for computing ηmix on this basis appears to be very successful. The ϕ ij to a large extent are temperature and composition independent and it has been shown that this fact can be utilised with success for predicting ηmix values at high temperatures.

Notes: Summary The simple expression of Wilke for viscosity which has proved very successful for mixtures of nonpolar gases has been examined here for mixtures involving polar gases also. The success achieved here is comparable to that obtained for nonpolar gases. A modification of the original procedure of Wilke has been suggested and tested successfully. It will be particularly useful where pure viscosity data may be lacking.

Notes: Summary A simple method based on the classical statistical mechanics is suggested for the calculation of thermal expansion of crystals. The adequacy of the procedure is tested for alkali halide crystals in conjunction with the interatomic potential of the modified Born-Mayer Type.

Notes: Summary The experimental binary thermal conductivity data of nineteen different gas pairs have been discussed and the competence of the rigorous, approximate and empirical procedures to represent them is investigated and discussed. In addition a new semi-theoretical method is suggested and tested. The suggested semi-theoretical procedure works very satisfactorily and is of good accuracy. It also compares favourably with the other methods. We also suggest a procedure for estimating thermal conductivity values at high temperature. This is an interesting and useful suggestion in view of the great practical need and their meagre availability.
