Summary The goal of this paper was to show that when there exists a disturbance or damage in the ego, as in schizophrenics, there exists also a disorder in the total time perspective (past and future). The experiment described herein proved the hypothesis. Two groups of 20 subjects were examined. One was formed of long-stay schizophrenics (median four years). The control group was formed of long-stay tuberculous patients (median of three years). The subjects were investigated by a self-questionnaire about seven past and future events, and then by organizing them sequentially and chronologically. It was shown that the total time perspective (past and future) is significantly shortened in schizophrenics as compared to that of the control group. It was also shown that there is a lack of synchronization between chronological and sequential ordering of events (incoherence) in six schizophrenics with regard to past events (not significant), and in 16 schizophrenics concerning future events (significant). It was observed that there appeared clusters of 3 events distributed around the date of outbreak of the disease of the subject. It was pointed out that “now” was given as answers concerning future events in 14 schizophrenics and in three subjects of the control group. Tentative explanations were given to explain these findings. Suggestions were made for future investigations.
