The equation, εX = mεX + c, has been derived from the Price-Alfrey and Hammett equations. The σp constants give the best correlation. With multiple substituted monomers, the equation εX,Z = m (σX + σZ) + c has been found to be applicable. Thus the ε parameter is found to be a function of both inductive and resonance effects. The equation qX = nσX + d has been derived from the Price-Alfrey and Hammett equations. Correlations of qx have been attempted with a number of substituent constants. The correlation, though generally best with σp and related constants, remains poor, even in series in which steric effects should be constant.
