Histochemical methods for the demonstration of enzyme activities and carbohydrates were applied to the bladder of the toad, Bufo marinus. The three cell types in the mucosa (ordinary epithelial cell, goblet cell, and mitochondria-rich cell) were found to be distinctive with the methods used. Dehydrogenase enzyme activities were highly concentrated in the mitochondria-rich cells. Membrane-associated ATPase activity was found in the basal cell-membranes of the mucosal cells, where active sodium transport is thought to occur. The potentialities of the various cell types for active electrolyte transport are discussed.
