    Notes: It has been considered for some time that the presence of birefringence in an oriented polymer must affect the light-scattering behavior. Previous analyses of this phenomenon are restricted to single-particle scattering. A more complete theory of the effect of birefringence on the scattering of light from correlated systems is presented. The measured scattering intensity is shown to be dependent upon the optical properties of the sample as well as the experimental technique and conditions.

    Notes: The birefringence of several biaxially oriented polypropylene films swollen with a number of fluids has been measured and found to exhibit a minimum when plotted against the fluid refractive index, as predicted by the theory of Wiener. However, a discrepancy in the form birefringence behavior is observed when samples of different degrees of crystallinity but the same total birefringence are compared. These results are interpreted in terms of Bullough's theory and suggest that this discrepancy arises because of different morphologies. A refractometric technique was employed that makes possible the simultaneous determination of birefringence and the volume fraction of fluid.

    Notes: The effect of birefringence on light scattering is considered, using classical theory. It is shown that in conjunction with polarized light scattering, the use of birefringence can aid in the reduction of experimental errors; also how new checks on theory can be made.     Notes: As part of a study in elucidating the mechanisms by which crazing is initiated in polymers, we have measured the force and birefringence decay which occurs in several polymers when placed in contact with methanol. In all cases, the force decay can be used to determine the rate of bulk diffusion of the liquid into the polymer. In contrast, the birefringence decay appears to be related to shear relaxation mechanisms which are highly dependent on the type of material. For example, in the case of simple rubbers such as polyisoprene, the rates of decay of force and birefringence are identical within experimental error. In contrast, in amorphous thermoplastics the force decay is typically an order of magnitude faster than the birefringence decay. These results are discussed in terms of distortional and orientational birefringence and with respect to the morphology of the glassy state.

    Notes: Both crazes and fracture surfaces in glassy polymers produce a low-angle scattering of x-rays. Scattering patterns are anisotropic and often show considerable streaking. In the one case (polystyrene) studied extensively so far, detalied analysis suggests that the craze is approximated as a collection of spheroidal or irregular-shaped voids surrounded by material with anisotropic density distribution arising from its orientation in the stress direction. The void dimension is about 90-115 Å and the specific internal surface area about 170 m2/cm3 of craze. These results and those from electron microscopic studies are reasonably consistent.

    Notes: A new method of inducing crazing and cracking in thermoplastics is discussed. The method involves the thermal quenching of hot thermoplastics into simple organic liquids or organic solutions. Data are presented for several different thermoplastics and a number of different liquids. The results are interpreted in terms of a model based on the work of Manning and Lineback that incorporates thermal strains and stresses, thermal conductivity, specific interfacial energies, and defects. The specific crazing energy for bisphenol-A polycarbonate when quenched into isopropyl alcohol is determined to be approximately 3 × 105 erg/cm2 from this model. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Most thermoplastics far below their glass transition give a brittle fracture when de-formed in uniaxial tension. Bisphenol-A polycarbonates are an exception and deform in a ductile manner. However, it has been observed in Izod impact studies of notched samples that the mode of failure changes from a ductile to a brittle fracture on annealing samples below Tg. It has been found that, when notched samples are stressed, a Griffith type flaw is formed under the notch. The criterion for the ductile brittle transition is evaluated in terms of σG (the stress required to propagate the Griffith flaw), and σy, the yield stress for the polymer. It has been found that the density and yield stress for the samples annealed at various temperatures are dependent upon previous thermal history and in particular on the molecular weíAght. On the basis of these measurements, it is concluded that many of the so-called anomalous effects observed with polycarbonate can be explained.

    Notes: Optical, mechanical, and thermal data on cold- and hot-drawn as well as crazed films of bisphenol A polycarbonate suggest that three separate processes occur during deformation. These processes are a volume change, a preferential orientation of the molecules along the deformation axis, and a configurational change within the molecules (ordering). An attempt is made to correlate these processes with the various types of experimental data. It is suggested that the ordering process is activated by surface, bulk, or external stresses, which are dependent upon molecular weight, processing history, and sample geometry.

    Notes: A technique, employing samples in the form of tuning forks, to measure the mechanical properties of polymers is presented. Results for low density polyethylene, polypropylene, and polycarbonates are shown. A large transition is observed for polypropylene at approximately +10°C and a small transition at -100°C for the polycarbonates. Polycarbonate data has also been obtained from 20 to 150°C, at approximately 70 cps. Effects of time, temperature, and history are presented.
