Notes: Both erythema gyratum repens (EGR) and acquired ichthyosis are distinctive dermatoses which have strong associations with internal malignancy. EGR usually precedes the diagnosis of malignancy whereas acquired ichthyosis commonly manifests after the detection of malignancy. We report a patient who initially presented with a figurate eruption of EGR which later developed into a widespread ichthyosis with disappearance of the serpiginous rash. Further investigations revealed an underlying transitional cell carcinoma of the kidney, an association which has not previously been reported with either EGR or acquired ichthyosis. The occurrence of two paraneoplastic skin disorders in the same patient may be explained by tumour cell secretion of transforming growth factor alpha, which has been shown to be mitogenic for keratinocytes.

Notes: 1. The residual protein content per unit DNA of the tissue rises markedly in occipital cortex, cerebral cortex, tectum and hippocampus of the developing rabbits in days following the opening of the eyes. The change is much less marked in cerebellar cortex during this period.2. Prior blinding of the animals diminishes significantly the rise in proteins of the occipital cortex. The effect of blinding on the expected rise in proteins of other areas is not significant.3. Exposure of adult animals to light stimulates the incorporation of dl-[1-14C]- valine and [U-14C]glucose into proteins of the occipital cortex as compared to animals kept in the dark room.

Notes: The frequency equation for Stoneley-type waves with symmetric vibrations propagated along the interfaces between an internal stratum and two adjacent halfspaces, all perfectly elastic, homogeneous and isotropic, is obtained as the vanishing of a determinant of the fourth order. For large values of the frequency, the equation reduces to that of Stoneley waves at the interface between two halfspaces. Discussion of the sign of this determinant for suitable values of the unknown leads to the condition for the existence of such waves both for a low-velocity and a high-velocity internal stratum. The ranges of values which the ratios of the elastic constants of the stratum and either halfspace must have are obtained by numerical computation and the results are presented both in tabular form and graphically.Tt is found that: (i) Stoneley waves with symmetric vibrations, when they exist, have their phase velocity lying between the distortional and Rayleigh wave velocities of the lower velocity medium, (ii) If, as is usual, a velocity ratio less than unity is associated with a density ratio less than unity, then such waves cannot exist unless the smaller of the two distortional wave velocities is greater than the higher Rayleigh wave velocity, (iii) As the frequency of these waves or the thickness of the stratum is decreased, there is a cut-off value of either below which Stoneley waves cannot be propagated.

Notes: Summary. We derive the frequency equation and the condition of existence of Stoneley type waves with antisymmetric vibrations which can be propagated along the interfaces between an internal stratum and two adjacent halfspaces of identical elastic properties, all perfectly elastic, homogeneous and isotropic. The ranges of existence of such waves are next obtained by numerical computation and the results are presented both in tabular form and graphically. For large values of the frequency, the frequency equation for these waves, like the one for waves with symmetric vibrations discussed in an earlier paper*, reduces to the velocity equation of Stoneley waves propagated along the interface between two halfspaces. For a low-velocity stratum, the results are similar to those for waves with symmetric vibrations. It is found that, for a pair of media for which waves of some frequency can exist, as the frequency of the waves or the thickness of the stratum is decreased, there is a cut-off value of either below which such waves cannot be propagated. For a high-velocity stratum, the results are in sharp contrast with those for waves with symmetric vibrations. Stoneley waves of all frequencies can exist for some pairs of materials. As the frequency of the waves or the thickness of the stratum is decreased, that is, as the ratio of the wave-length to the thickness of the stratum is increased, the regions of existence expand until a certain limiting region of existence is obtained when this ratio tends to infinity.Another difference between waves with symmetric and antisymmetric vibrations is that whereas for the former the phase velocity could not be less than the smaller of the two Rayleigh wave velocities, for the latter there is no theoretical lower limit.

Notes: Patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension often have abnormal extracellular fluid volume regulation, resulting in accumulation of fluid as ascites, oedema or pleural effusion. These complications carry a poor prognosis with nearly half of the patients with ascites dying in the ensuing 2–3 years. In contrast to what happens in the abdominal cavity where large amounts of fluid (5–8 L) accumulate with the patient only experiencing only mild symptoms, in the thoracic cavity smaller amounts of fluid (1–2 L) cause severe symptoms such as shortness of breath, cough and hypoxaemia. Hepatic hydrothorax is defined as a pleural effusion, usually 〉500 mL, in patients with cirrhosis without cardiopulmonary disease. The pathophysiology involves the direct movement of ascitic fluid from the peritoneal cavity into the pleural space through diaphragmatic defects. The estimated prevalence among cirrhotic patients is 5–10%. The effusion, which is a transudate, most commonly occurs in the right hemithorax. The mainstay of therapy is similar to that of portal hypertensive ascites and includes sodium restriction and administration of diuretics. Refractory hydrothorax can be managed with transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt in selected cases. Pleurodesis is not routinely recommended. Suitable patients with hepatic hydrothorax should be considered candidates for liver transplantation.
