Notes: [Auszug] IN the past, the order Amoebida Calkins has been divided into families on such characters as the presence of a flagellate stage under certain physiological conditions, their parasitic or free-living nature, the possession of an accessory body called Neben-korper, etc. Such a system is not based on ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE study of selective feeding... of soil protozoa, especially amœbæ on a large number of bacterial strains, led to the development of an improved method6 of counting soil Protozoa. In the past, dilution methods7 of estimating Protozoa numbers have suffered, first ...

Notes: [Auszug] In spite of the fact that it is generally believed that other methods of catching are also poor at full moon, in the absence of any real evidence for this there was a distinct probability that the low catches in a light trap might be due to a lowered relative luminosity and hence a lowered ...

Notes: [Auszug] ALTHOUGH the lytic effect of certain myxobacteria upon the true bacteria (eubacteria) has been known for some years1–4, the mechanism of the process is imperfectly understood, and no one seems hitherto to have studied the possible production of antibiotic substances by the ...

Notes: [Auszug] ALTHOUGH the genera Dictyostelium and Polysphondylium were created by Brefeld1,2 in 1869 and 1884, no study has been made in Britain of that interesting group, the Acrasieæ, to which they belong. The occurrence of Dictyostelium in Polish and American soils has been recorded by ...

Notes: [Auszug] Crump1 showed that excystment in Amoeba Z (Didascalus ihorntoni ; Singh6) took place without the presence of bacteria, while Amoeba 4 (Schizo-pyrenus russelli; Singh6) excysted only in the presence of certain bacteria (Aerobacter sp. and 4036). She suggested that the two species of bacteria produce ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE genera and species among the small free-living, intestinal and parasitic amoebae have been largely created by previous workers on the basis of their nuclear structure and their mode of nuclear division. A review of the literature on the nuclear division in small free-living amoebae clearly ...

Notes: [Auszug] EIGHTY-SEVEN strains of very varied bacteria, t_j comprising common and rare strains from soil, pigmented and non-pigmented 'miscellaneous' strains, and a number of plant pathogens, were tested on eight micro-predators belonging to four different groups commonly found in soil. The methods used and ...

Notes: Summary In presence of 5 N to 6 N hydrochloric acid, ferrous ethylenediamine sulphate was used as a reducing agent to determine indirectly potassium chlorate, potassium bromate, potassium metaperiodate, potassium dichromate, potassium ferricyanide, potassium permanganate, potassium persulphate, hydrogen peroxide, ceric sulphate and chloramine-T. An excess of ferrous ethylenediamine sulphate added to each of the substances in the acid medium was titrated with a standard solution of sodium hypochlorite. Iodine monochloride was used as catalyst and preoxidizer and chloroform was used as an indicator. Chloroform was coloured violet owing to the liberation of iodine during the titration and became very pale yellow at the end-point because of the formation of iodine monochloride.
