Fundamental and Critical Remarks Concerning the Theory of the Keto-Enol Conversion Results of Recent Measurements of Keto-Enol Equilibria of β-Diketones and Their Temperature Dependence in the Gaseous StateA consideration of the present ideas on the intramolecular processes of the keto-enol conversion shows the necessity for more detailed data on the energetic thermodynamic values governing enolization. These were determined by systematically measuring the temperature dependence of the enolization of homologous β-diketones in the gaseous state. The influence of the heat effect (change of enthalpy) and the change of entropy in enolization is discussed by means of examples. It is shown that the present ideas on the dependence of enolization on constitution must be considerably modified. One of the main reasons for the discrepancy, resulting from gas measurements, between present speculations and energy values of the keto-enol conversion measured by experiments is the neglect of the uncertainty of the influence of the solvatation. Considerations concerning the temperature dependence of the keto-enol equilibrium with a view to possible superimposed equilibria between open and ring enol form show an essential influence of the molar heats and their change in enolization. The dependence of the molar heats on the constitution is an essential factor for the judgement of the connection between the chemical constitution and the tendency to enolize.
Notes:
