Notes: Abstract The title compounds were prepared by six different routes, and recommendations are given for the more convenient procedures in laboratory-scale syntheses. Modifications in the literature preparations of the 9E,11E and 9E,11Z isomers are described. Baseline separation of a prepared mixture of all four isomers of the (9Z, 11Z), (9E, 11E), (9E, 11Z), and (9Z, 11E)-9,11-hexadecadienals was achieved using GC methods with standard capillary columns. [13C]NMR spectroscopy of the alkene carbon atoms clearly differentiates between theZ,Z, E,E and eitherE,Z orZ,E isomers of the precursor dienols and thus of the dienals.

Notes: A six noded triangular finite element has been proposed to model variable order singularities in the first derivatives of field variables occurring at multiple locations (up to three) lying in close proximity. The element satisfies the convergence requirements fully. The element will be very useful in the analysis of neighbouring cracks, zig-zag cracks, kinked cracks, etc., involving mechanical and/or thermal loadings. The first degenerate form, which is a two point variable order singularity element, can be used, for example, to cover the distance between two adjacent crack tips. The second degenerate form, which is a one point variable order singularity element, can be used around a crack tip like any other crack tip elements. Six case studies have been reported, three involving mechanical loadings and the other three thermal loadings. These have helped to check the performance of the element and its two degenerate forms. The accuracy of the results in all the examples is good.

Notes: Blends of poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) and acrylonitrile-butadiene styrene (ABS) terpolymer were prepared in different ratios by a melt blending technique. ABS containing three different levels of rubber content were used. A quantitative assessment of ABS in PVC/ABS blends has been shown by infrared studies. ABS content has been shown as the presence of the characteristic acrylonitrile peak. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies have been carried out to study the glass transition (Tg) behavior of the blends. Two Tg values corresponding to PVC and styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) copolymer have been observed. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) reveals a significant improvement in thermal stability of these blends as compared to PVC. Mechanical properties show a significant increase in the impact strength which is related to rubber content of the ABS used. Morphological studies have been carried out by scanning electron microscopy which support the observation that an increase in rubber content results in greater ductility.

Notes: Polyesterimide (PEI) and phenol formaldehyde (PF) samples were synthesized, and composites of the two polymers, as well as composites with carbon, were prepared. Using a pinon-disc machine, the friction and wear properties of the following samples were studied in the load range of two to eight bars:Phenolformaldehyde vs. steelPhenol formaldehyde cured with hexamethylenetetramine vs. steelPolyesterimide vs steelPolyesterimide and carbon composite vs steelPhenol formaldehyde vs polyesterimidePhenol formaldehyde and polyesterimide composite vs. phenol formaldehydePhenol formaldehyde and polyesterimide composite vs. steel. The data obtained from these experiments were compared with literature data on poly(tetrafluoroethylene) and nylon, conventionally used for tribological applications. It is seen that, in terms of thermal stability, friction, and wear, PEI and PF are promising for tribological applications.

Notes: Mechanical properties such as tensile and flexural properties as well as impact behavior of nickel-powder-filled isotactic polypropylene composites were investigated in the composite composition range 0-3.5 volume % Ni. Tensile modulus, strength, and elongation-at-break decreased with increase in Ni content, which is attributed to the introduction of discontinuity in the structure. Analysis of tensile strength data indicated the introduction of stress concentration consequent upon addition of Ni into polypropylene. Izod impact strength at first increased up to a critical Ni content beyond which the value decreased inappreciably while flexural modulus and strength increased with filler concentration.

Notes: Blends of poly(butylene terephthalate) and high density polyethylene at a ratio of 80:20 wt% were reinforced with short glass fibers varying from 10 to 30 wt% to enhance mechanical properties. Considerable fiber damage occurred during injection molding, reducing the number average fiber length from the starting value of 4.5 mm to 〈 1 mm. This value decreased with increasing fiber content, which is also responsible for lowering the reinforcement efficiency. The variation in mechanical properties has been explained on the basis of fiber concertration. The effect of an ionomer, which was used to compatibilize the blends, on properties of corresponding composites has also been studied.

Notes: An element for analysis of variable order one point singularities in plane problems has been proposed. The element meets all the convergence requirements, viz. the rigid body mode, the constant strain condition and the interelement compatibility. It can be easily incorporated in any package based on the displacement formulation. Four examples from fracture mechanics are presented to demonstrate its performance. The examples involve mechanical or thermal loadings. The accuracy of results in all the examples is very good.

Notes: An element formulation is suggested to obtain variable order singularities simultaneously at the two neighbouring corner nodes of a 4-noded quadrilateral. The element is useful for modelling a kinked crack with small kink length. The accuracy is good and this is obtained at a substantially reduced computational cost. Case studies are presented to illustrate the usefulness and the accuracy obtainable.

Notes: A 3-noded triangular two singular points finite element is proposed to model two variable order singularities lying at close proximities as in the case of a kinked crack. The element meets the rigid body mode and the interelement compatibility of the convergence criteria. A degenerate form of the element is a one point variable order singularity element, which meets all the convergence requirements. A number of kinked crack problems have been analysed using the new element and its degenerate form. The computed results are compared with analytical solutions. The accuracy of the results is found to be good.

Notes: The melt rheological properties of nickel powder filled polypropylene composites were investigated. The effect of filler concentration on shear stress-shear rate data, melt viscosity and melt elasticity parameters were determined by using a capillary rheometer. The study shows that the materials follow a power law in viscous behavior over the entire range of shear rates investigated and that the viscosity increases and elasticity decreases as filler concentration is increased up to a critical value. However, beyond the critical filler content melt viscosity decreases while melt elasticity increases. The effect of temperature on the viscoelastic properties of filled polypropylene was also investigated.
