Notes: Abstract Two-dimensional photothermal displacement measurements were carried out on TiO2, ZrO2, and HfO2 coatings to uncover single shot incubation produced by 248 nm laser light at fluences below the damage threshold. The incubation behavior of the three coatings differs and correlates with the ratio of band gap to photon energy. The non-destructive nature of the photothermal displacement technique, its high lateral resolution, and its sensitivity for reading single shot imprints by an excimer laser lends this scheme a capacity for use in optical storage.

Notes: Abstract Transient Thermal Gratings (TTGs) at surfaces of absorbing materials have been utilized for investigating heat diffusion in bulk materials and thin films. In this report, we describe the theoretical background of the technique and present experimental data. TTGs were excited in the surface plane by interference of two pulsed laser beams and monitored by a cw probe beam, either via temperature dependence of the reflectivity or by deflection from the displacement pattern. A theoretical model describing the thermal and thermoelastic surface response was developed, both for a homogeneous material and a multilayer structure. The potential of the technique will be demonstrated by experimental results on (i) thermal diffusivities of bulk materials, (ii) anisotropic lateral heat transport, and (iii) thermal diffusivities of metal and diamond films. Furthermore, we will show that TTGs allow thermal depth profiling of inhomogeneous materials whenever there is a vertical gradient in thermal conductivity.

Notes: Abstract The energy of the acoustic pulse generated by laser-surface interactions and measured by probe beam deflection was used to investigate laser surface damage thresholds of fluoride crystals with optical quality. It was found that damage thresholds decrease with increasing density of surface states. The defect density also controls the energy absorption mechanism: for surfaces with few defects, like polished MgF2 and CaF2, avalanche breakdown occurs at above 1 GW/cm2, whereas for materials with lower damage thresholds, such as LiF, BaF2, and roughened or incubated surfaces of CaF2, multiphoton absorption across the band gap is observed.
