    Notes: To ensure the stability of the concentrated emulsions that are employed as precursors for polymerization, a two-step concentrated emulsion polymerization pathway is described. In the first step, the monomer is partially polymerized by heating at 50°C until a certain conversion is reached. Subsequently, the partially polymerized monomer is used as the dispersed phase to prepare a concentrated emulsion in which water constitutes the continuous phase. The concentrated emulsion has a large volume fraction of the dispersed phase (0.74-0.99) and the appearance of a gel. Several typical monomers are employed to correlate the stability of the concentrated emulsion and the extent of partial polymerization of the dispersed phase. It was found that monomers, which cannot lead to stable concentrated emulsions, can generate them after partial polymerization. Subsequent polymerization of the concentrated emulsion leads to latex particles. Copolymers and polymer composites were also prepared by the two-step procedure. In the latter case, water was replaced with a solution of a hydrophilic monomer in water as the continuous phase. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The bound water content of original and frozen activated sludge and an inorganic sludge were measured via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and drying tests. Original sludge contained a significant level of bound water which was reduced by about 50% after freeze/thaw treatment. A simple thermodynamic interpretation showed that liquid-solid binding strength played an important role in depression of the freezing point of bound water in a sludge. The choice of a threshold temperature in a DSC test was equivalent to definition of a threshold binding strength dividing bound/non-bound water content. The possible close relationship between the bound water content measured via DSC and the drying test is discussed. The importance for sample uniformity was also examined.

    Notes: The Raman spectrum of gaseous nitrocyclopropane, c—C3H5NO2 has been recorded from 3500 to 30 cm-1. The interesting internal NO2 torsion was observed at 85±2cm-1 from which a barrier to internal rotation in the vapor state of 1680±70 cm-1 (4.8±0.2 kcal mol-1) was calculated. It is shown that this torsional frequency is consistent with the relative intensities of the vibrational excited states in the microwave spectrum. This barrier value is compared to those for several other NO2 substituted hydrocarbons as well as for the corresponding isoelectronic BF2 substituted molecules. The high barrier value supports the structural arguments that there is significant pseudo-conjugation between the cyclopropane ring orbitals and the substituent NO2 group. A revised vibrational assignment is presented which is compared to the one previously given for the isoelectronic molecule, c-C3H5BF2, as well as for c-C3H5BCI2.
