Notes: Abstract Two new absolute transition rates are reported for the nucleus144Sm following an (α, α′) Coulomb excitation study. They are B(E3; 3−→ 0+)=(38±3) W.u. and B(E1;3− → 2+)=(2.8±0.4)×10−3 W.u. This large E1 matrix element, along with the previously known B(E1; 1− →+) value support the interpretation of the 1− state in this nucleus as 2-phonon 2+ × 3− excitation. In the frame of the IBM-1 +f-boson model we show the need for a two-body term in the E1 transition operator. Estimates for the strengths of the one and two-body parts of the E1 transition operator are obtained from these experimental data.

Notes: Abstract We analyze the pion-exchange contribution to semi-inclusive leptoproduction on protons, with a slow nucleon or delta in the final state. We calculate the crosssection for slow protons including also the effect of the delta intermediate state, which is the dominant contribution. A comparison with recent experiment shows reasonable agreement for small Bjorkenx, if the cut-off in the pion-nucleon-delta form-factor is chosen to be around 0.7 GeV. This substantiates the recent conjecture that sea-quark distributions can be completely associated with the meson cloud, but suggests that the pion-nucleon-delta form-factor should be softer than the one used in description of nuclear forces by meson exchange. We also compare the pion-exchange and the string-fragmentation models and point out possible future experimental tests.

Notes: Abstract The plant regeneration ability of zygotic embryo-derived callus cultures was studied for 12 A. cepa varieties and accessions, two A. fistulosum varieties, one A. fistulosum x A. cepa interspecific hybrid and two A. porrum varieties. Compact embryogenic callus was induced on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. The embryogenic calluses of all three Allium species were similar in appearance. For all accessions tested plants could be regenerated at a high frequency from this compact callus through somatic embryogenesis, when using kinetin supplemented MS medium (regeneration medium). Addition of abscisic acid to the regeneration medium stimulated the formation of both somatic embryos and shoots for a number of varieties. Concerning shoot regeneration from callus cultures, significant differences existed between genotypes of all accessions except one.
