Notizen: Abstract We reviewed MRI studies of 60 patients presenting with extradural compressive myeloradiculopathy secondary to vertebral disease to assess the imaging features which may help in differentiating tuberculous from neoplastic disease. Spin-echo T1-, proton density- and T2-weighted images were available for all patients and fast low-angle shot images with a low flip angle for 21 patients. Contrast-enhanced images were available for 28 patients. There were 41 patients with tuberculosis and 19 patients with neoplastic disease (metastases 11, lymphoma 6, plasmacytoma 1, and giant cell tumour 1). Discovertebral disease with or without involvement of the posterior arch was a feature not only of tuberculous spondylitis (30 patients) but also of metastases (6). The remaining 11 patients with tuberculosis had “atypical” involvement (vertebral body with or without posterior arch in 8 and posterior arch alone in 3) described as typical of neoplasms. This “typical” involvement was seen in metastases (5), lymphoma (6) and the 2 primary bone tumours. The presence of an abscess helped in differentiating tuberculosis from neoplasia in 22 of the 41 patients with tuberculosis and was absent in all with neoplasms. The presence of bone fragments in 16 patients (8 with and 8 without an abscess) was found to be specific for tuberculosis. In the absence of an abscess or bone fragments, image-guided biopsy is essential to establish the diagnosis.

Notizen: Summary A proposal is under consideration to construct a dam on an experimental basis by a cast (or directional) blasting technique, ‘DBT’. The dam site is located at Bharari Khad, a tributary of the Sutlaz river in Himachal Pradesh. Site investigations have been completed and a large scale blast has been designed for construction of the experimental dam. The paper describes the basic design concept of DBT and application of ‘throw’ and ‘caving’ methods for construction of dams. The preliminary tests required to design the blasting pattern are detailed. The technique has a great potential because it reduces construction cost and time particularly in inaccessible mountain regions.

Notizen: Proton and carbon NMR data are provided for 21 ring A and ring B cyclosteroids and cyclopropano (or methylene) steroids. Shift assignments were made using standard 2D NMR techniques, while ring A proton subspectra were extracted with a 1D TOCSY experiment. Coupling constants were obtained from iterative spin system simulation of these sub-spectra. Ring A conformations were determined from the two- and three-bond proton-proton couplings and NOE measurements. The utility and limitations of extended Karplus-type equations, the effect of cyclopropyl groups on vicinal and geminal couplings and cyclopropane-induced chemical shifts are discussed.

Notizen: Ring A proton shifts and couplings and 13C shifts of all carbons are given for 17β-acetoxy-2α-methyl- and 17β-methoxy-2β-methyl-5α-androstan-3-one and 2,2-dimethyl-17β-methoxy-5α-androstan-3-one. It was concluded that the 2β-methyl derivative exists with ring A in a regular chair conformation while the 2β-methyl derivative exists with ring A in an inverted boat conformation with C-2 and C-5 at the bow/stern positions. The data for 2,2-dimethyl-17β-methoxy-5α-androstan-3-one suggest an equilibrium of these two conformers.
