Notes: Abstract The evolution of the Pt-Au/Al2O3 system with the reduction time can be followed by1H NMR of chemisorbed hydrogen. When the reduction time increases, the signal with the positive shift, due to hydrogen chemisorbed on pure gold, decreases and disappears completely. At the same time there is a large variation in the negative chemical shift of the hydrogen chemisorbed on the particles containing platinum. This evolution of the NMR spectra demonstrates that mixed Pt-Au particles are formed. Although it appears that after a very long reduction time the platinum covers the gold, the distribution of these two metals in the particles at the atomic scale cannot be determined by this technique.

Notes: Abstract Sulfuric acid containing limited amounts of water, H2SO4.nH2O with 0.23≤n≤4, has been studied by 1H broad-line NMR at 4 K and MAS NMR at room temperature. The broad-line NMR spectra indicate the formation of H3O+ and HSO4 - ions. H2SO4.2H2O is correctly written as H3O+HSO4 -.H2O. The results are compared with the Nafion- H/water system.

Notes: NMR nutation and quadrupole echo experiments were used to determine the quadrupole frequency (ωQ) of 87Rb (I = 3/2) in a single crystal of RbCaF3. Since RbCaF3 has a cubic unit cell above 195 K, there is no second-order quadrupole shift and the spectrum is rather featureless. By fitting the response of 87Rb, as a function of pulse duration, to the predicted response we were able to determine that the average ωQ/2π = 4.5 kHz in this sample. Discrepancies in the agreement between the theory and the experiment for the echo response were attributed to differential relaxation of the central and satellite transitions.
