Notes: Summary Increased erythrocyte 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate concentrations are associated with increased haemoglobin glycosylation in patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus who have no cause or symptoms of hypoxic stress. This change in 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate metabolism is additional to its response to changes in circulating haemoglobin concentration. Statistical analysis of data showed that erythrocyte 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate concentration did not correlate with the absolute concentration of circulating haemoglobin A1c, but with the proportion of haemoglobin glycosylated. This finding is consistent with the hypothesis that it is changes in the position of the erythrocyte oxygen dissociation curve which modulate the increase in 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate synthesis upon haemoglobin A1c formation.

Notes: Abstract The subcentre invariant manifold of elasticity in a thin rod may be used to give a rigorous and appealing approach to deriving one-dimensional beam theories. Here I investigate the analytically simple case of the deformations of a perfectly uniform circular rod. Many, traditionally separate, conventional approximations are derived from within this one approach. Furthermore, I show that beam theories are convergent, at least for the circular rod, and obtain an accurate estimate of the limit of their validity. The approximate evolution equations derived by this invariant manifold approach are complete with appropriate initial conditions, forcing and, in at least one case, boundary conditions.

Notes: One of the main hazards associated with the use of hydraulic fluids is the accidental release of hydraulic fluid near to a source of ignition. Several tests simulating this hazard have been developed but, in the opinion of the authors, none fulfils all the scriterla required of a flammability test. A new form of test has been developed. A test chamber is ventilated by a smooth flow of air; the hydraulic fluid under test is sprayed into the test chamber and ignited. The temperature rise in the gases leaving the stack and the radiation from the flame are measured at a specified time and from these measurements the heat output of the flame is estimated. Different fluids are then compared on the basis of their heat output values and data are presented in the paper for a variety of fluids.
