Notes: Abstract Somatic embryogenesis was achieved in callus cultures dervied from 40-day-old semimature zygotic embryos of Dalbergia sissoo on semi-solid Murashige and Skoog (MS) salts and vitamins supplemented with 0.46–1.16 µM kinetin, 6.78–9.04 µM 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) and 30 g/l sucrose. Somatic embryos proliferated rapidly by secondary somatic embryogenesis after transfer to half-strength basal MS medium supplemented with 0.46–1.16 µM kinetin and 6.78– 9.04 µM 2,4-D with 2% (w/v) sucrose. The light-green somatic embryos germinated on half-strength MS salts and vitamins supplemented with 0.5 mg/l abscisic acid and 2% (w/v) sucrose. The developmental stages of somatic embryogenesis were studied by light and scanning electron microscopy.

Notes: Summary Increased erythrocyte 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate concentrations are associated with increased haemoglobin glycosylation in patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus who have no cause or symptoms of hypoxic stress. This change in 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate metabolism is additional to its response to changes in circulating haemoglobin concentration. Statistical analysis of data showed that erythrocyte 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate concentration did not correlate with the absolute concentration of circulating haemoglobin A1c, but with the proportion of haemoglobin glycosylated. This finding is consistent with the hypothesis that it is changes in the position of the erythrocyte oxygen dissociation curve which modulate the increase in 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate synthesis upon haemoglobin A1c formation.

Notes: Abstract Ceramic model catalyst materials of general formula SrSn1−x Sb x O3 are synthesised by solid state reaction. X-ray diffraction shows the materials to be single phase over the composition range 0 ⩽x⩽0.085, with a second phase, identified as SrSb2O5, being produced at higher antimony doping levels. XPS, Auger electron spectroscopy and valence band photoemission show strong segregation of Sb to the surface of the material even within the single phase regime. The catalytic properties of the materials are examined using methanol oxidation as a test reaction. The activity and selectivity to formaldehyde production shown by these materials is found to be strongly correlated with the attainment of the bulk solubility limit of Sb in the SrSnO3 perovskite host.
