    Notes: Abstract  The restoration of soil microbial activities is a basic step in the reclamation of burnt soils. For this reason, the ability of municipal solid waste compost to accelerate the re-establishment of bacterial and fungal populations, as well as to re-establish physical properties in a burnt soil, was evaluated in a field experiment. Four treatments were performed by adding different doses of compost (0, 0.5, 1 and 2 kg compost m–2 soil) to a burnt Calcic Rodoxeralf soil, and the changes in microbial populations, salt content, aggregate stability and bulk density were evaluated for 1 year. Initially, the addition of compost had a negative effect on soil microbial populations, but 3 months after compost addition, the number of viable fungal propagules increased in all the amended soils. This positive effect lasted until the end of the experiment. From 30 days onwards, all the amended soils showed a greater total number of bacterial cell forming units than the unamended burnt soil. Organic amendment increased the percentage of 2- to 4-mm aggregates, although the effect on the stability of the 0.2- to 2-mm aggregates and on bulk density was less noticeable.

    Notes: Abstract The beta-gamma spectroscopic study of22O is presented. This nucleus, produced as a projectile-like fragment from the interaction of a 60 MeV/n40Ar beam with a Be target, has been separated by the LISE spectrometer. Several gamma rays from22O decay have been observed, from which a half-life of (2.25±0.15)s has been determined. Accurate excitation energies have been deduced for several states in22F. A partial beta decay scheme of22O has been established. Experimental results have been compared with shell model calculations.

    Notes: Abstract Neutron-deficient isotopes with Z=21 to 26 have been produced as projectile-like fragments of an intense58Ni GANIL beam of 69 MeV/nucleon. The nuclei selected by the upgraded LISE3 spectrometer were identified and implanted in a silicon detector telescope. The43Cr,47Fe and46Fe isotopes were identified for the first time whereas45Fe,45Mn,44Mn and42V were not observed, indicating probable instability of these nuclei against particle emission. Measurements of the half-lives of43Cr and46Mn have been performed and the analysis of their measured beta-delayed proton spectra has given, through the isobaric multiplet mass equation, an empirical estimation of their masses. Half-lives of44Cr,43V,47Fe and46Fe have also been measured. A discussion of various mass predictions for nuclei at the proton drip-line is given.
