Notes: Abstract The recruitment of monocytes into the scrapie-affected brain was investigated in female mice reconstituted with male bone marrow, using a Y-chromosome-specific probe and F4/80 immunocytochemistry. Recruitment of monocytes could be demonstrated in six out of eight animals and the number of recruited cells correlated with the severity of vacuolation in most, but not all, animals. The proportion of microglia derived from recruited monocytes varied between individual animals, did not correlate with the increase in cellularity (glia) in affected areas of brain and did not affect the length of incubation period. Thus, it is unlikely that the recruitment of monocytes is a pivotal event in the development of early pathological changes in scrapie. The morphology of recruited cells in scrapie lesions, as revealed by F4/80 immunoreactivity, was indistinguishable from that of activated resident microglia.

Notes: Abstract Theγ-radiation emitted after thermal neutron capture in isotopically enriched58Ni and60Ni was measured at the ILL high flux reactor by means of Ge/NaI detectors operated in Compton suppression and pair spectrometer mode. The neutron binding energies were determined asB n (59Ni)=8999.15(23) keV and Bn(61Ni)=7820.07(20) keV; some 95% of the totalγ-ray fluxes through59,61Ni were assigned. Theγ-ray strength functions of the primary transitions and the level densities are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The γ-radiation following single and double neutron capture in isotopically enriched62Ni was studied at the high flux reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin, using a pair and Compton suppressed germanium detector. Measurements before and after 170 d of breeding were performed. The γ-ray fluxes through63Ni and64Ni are discussed; several new levels and spin-parity assignments were found. On the basis of the known discrete levels and the low-energy neutron resonances, level density parameters were determined within the Constant Temperature Fermi Gas model. The neutron binding energies were measured asB n (63Ni)=6837.92(18) keV andB n (64Ni)=9657.64(24) keV. The63Ni (n, γ) cross section for reactor neutrons was measured to be σ=20 −2 +5 b.

Notes: The structure of the polycarbonate chain has been analyzed from the point of view of the spatial configurations it may assume. The carbonate group is certainly planar, and the trans, trans configuration probably is strongly preferred. Rotations about the aryloxygen bonds are subject to symmetric, twofold potentials. It follows that the molecule can be treated as a freely rotating chain consisting of a succession of virtual bonds 7.0 Å in length, joined at angles of ca. 112°. Calculations carried out on this basis yield 〈r2〉0/M = 0.85 Å2/g-mole wt for the unperturbed random coil, in excellent agreement with the experimental results of Berry, Nomura, and Mayhan. The effect of occurrence of some of the carbonate groups in cis, trans configurations is investigated using more elaborate methods.

Notes: The length of the span of the terephthaloyl residue in poly(ethylene terephthalate) guarantees independence of the conformations of successive repeating units of the chain. Interactions within units of the chain are amenable to interpretation by comparisons with related polymers; cis and trans conformations of the terephthaloyl residue are given equal weighting. The mean-square dimension ratio (〈r2〉0/M)∞ estimated on this basis is in substantial accord with the value deduced from experiments.

Notes: The statistical mechanical treatment of polymeric chains in terms of the largest eigenvalue of the product of statistical weight matrices for the rotational interactions of skeletal bonds of the repeat unit becomes excessively complicated if the repeat unit spans more than three or four skeletal bonds. Moreover, such treatment is necessarily limited to chains in which the number of repeat units is indefinitely large. Newer methods are readily applicable to chains of any degree of polymerization comprising repeat units of any realizable length. If interdependence of neighboring bond rotations is confined to bond pairs within a given unit, rotations about a pair of bonds belonging to neighboring units being mutually independent, further simplifications may be introduced without sacrifice of rigor. Polyamides, in which rotation about bonds on opposite sides of the amide group are independent, are polymers of this type. Adherence of the amide group to the planar trans conformation favors a more extended configuration of the chain, but this effect is dominated by the smaller steric repulsions affecting rotations about bonds which are first, second, and third neighbors of the amide group. It is for this reason that the characteristic ratio 〈r2〉0〉/nl2 for poly(hexamethylene adipamide), ca. 6.0 according to experimental results of Saunders, is less than the value, 8.0, for polymethylene at 25°C. The characteristic ratios and molecular dipole moments are computed as functions of the degree of polymerization. The poly(εaminocaproamide) chain also is treated.

Notes: 4-Substituted-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-diones have been used to synthesize a series of new polydienes by the “ene” reaction at ambient temperatures. The extent of chemical conversion can be varied widely and up to 93% of the diene-repeating units of the parent polymer chain undergo reaction. Yields of the new polymers based on the reactant range from 90 to 95% at room temperature; their physical properties range from secondary crosslinking effects or elasticity at low degrees of conversion to rigid, amorphous polymers with high softening points at high degrees of conversion. The new polymers show a predictable correlation between the extent of conversion and the softening point. A similar correlation exists between the polarity of the new polymers and the extent of conversion. Polydienes with conversions to the extent of 45% or greater are soluble in aqueous solutions of sodium hydroxide and those with conversions of 60% or greater are soluble in aqueous sodium bicarbonate. Thus, in general, the new polymers (1) have higher Tg, (2) become increasingly polar, hence are soluble in polar solvents, and (3) possess a reasonably acidic proton, hence form salts. Bistriazolinediones result in room temperature crosslinking. A kinetic study with model compounds suggests that the rate of the reaction can be varied, depending on the electronic nature of the 4-substituent.
