Notes: Summary The relative viabilities of homozygous and heterozygous karyotypes were measured by making crosses between strains ofD. ananassae homozygous for ST or inverted gene orders in the second and third chromosomes. The strains utilized during the present study originated from widely separated localities in India, Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabaru, Malaysia and Chian Mai, Thailand. The presence of heterosis in many interpopulation crosses is evident from the results which show that the inversion heterozygotes formed by chromosomes coming from distant populations exhibit heterosis. On the other hand, heterosis is absent in two intrapopulation crosses. Thus the present results provide evidence that heterozygosis for many genes and gene complexes does produce high fitness without previous selectional coadaptation.

Notes: Summary The resistance sources among various test cultivars of urdbean to Colletotrichum truncatum, a leaf spotting pathogen, were identified and genetics of resistance was worked out by studying F1, F2 and F3 generations of crosses between resistant cultivars and the susceptible cv. Kulu 4 and of those among the resistant parents. The resistance was found to be controlled by single dominant genes and the resistance genes were non-allelic.

Notes: Summary To introduce resistance to fungal and viral diseases into urdbean (Vigna mungo), it was crossed with adzukibean (Vigna angularis) to achieve an interspecific hybrid between the two species by using different non-conventional breeding methods. Partial success was obtained with the use of UV irradiated pollen, intraspecific hybrids as parents and spray of immuno-suppressants on the female parent under glass house conditions and to the extent of callusing in aseptic culture.

Notes: Abstract The O2 uptake through water has been measured in case of Heteropneustes fossilis during development and growth and its relationship to body size established. A higher rate of O2 uptake during the early phase of ontogenesis is related to intense growth of the respiratory surface area and increasing metabolic demand of the fish. The logarithmic plot of data for O2 uptake in relation to body size shows a statistically significant two-component curve; one related to the fish when it is a fully aquatic breather and the other when it changes to bimodal gas exchange. The onset of the air breathing habit brings about a 40% drop in O2 uptake through water, which is made good through the newly developed air breathing organ.

Notes: Abstract Extensive γ-γ coincidence measurements have been made on γ rays accompanying theβ − decay of214Bi using a conventional GeGe coincidence spectrometer. A total of 33 new γ transitions among levels of214Po have been established. Twenty-three previously reported but unplaced transitions have now been assigned in the level scheme. In addition to confirming 56 previously proposed levels, four new levels are established at 1015.05, 1712.98, 3003.5 and 3160.5 keV. Directional correlation measurements have been made on six weak cascades which have the first excited state in common. Mixing ratios have been deduced for the transitions concerned.

Notes: Summary Dry-matter accumulation, and concentration and uptake of nitrogen increased with increasing level of nitrogen at all the stages of crop growth. The differences in nitrogen concentration due to nitrogen levels were greatest at panicle initiation stage and started becoming narrower with the advancement in crop age. Split application of nitrogen with its heavier fractions at tillering and panicle initiation stages either through soil alone or soil+foliage (1/3+1/3+1/3) resulted in higher dry-matter accumulation, and higher nitrogen concentration and uptake than other methods. The crop, on an average, removed 61 kg N/ha. Plants accumulated nearly 15% of the total absorbed nitrogen, up to tillering, 50% up to panicle initiation and 85–90% up to heading. Proportionately lesser nitrogen uptake and dry-matter accumulation at post-heading stage is an indicative of a major constraint for production efficiency of rainfed-upland rice culture.

Notes: Summary Studies revealed that Zn-deficiency symptoms were induced markedly by the levels of nitrogen and its source in rainfed lowland rice grown on calcareous soil. Visual Zn-deficiency symptoms recorded 3 weeks after transplanting showed that increased supply of nitrogen at puddling resulted in significant increase in the extent of deficiency symptoms of this nutrient element. Zn-deficiency symptoms got aggravated with Mussorrie Rock Phos-coated urea (MRPCU) followed by sulphur-coated urea (SCU). Zn-deficiency symptoms induced by urea supergranules (USG) and prilled urea (PU) supplying two-thirds of nitrogen as basal were found to be of moderate level. No symptoms of Zn-deficiency were noted with no-nitrogen control.

Notes: Abstract The O2 consumption (mg/hr) through water in case of Anabas testudineus during development and growth has been measured and its relationship to body weight or length studied. The logarithmic plot of 02 uptake through water either against body weight or length suggested a statistically significant (P 〉 3.53) two-component curve, the point of intersection being at 11 mg body weight and 1.78 cm body length. These are the theoretical values of weight or length at which the responsibility of supplementing nearly 40% of the total O2 demand through the newly developed air breathing organ falls in the early life of the fish. One of the impelling causes forcing developing fry of Anabas to adopt a bimodal gas exchange machinery seems to be 4 fold increase in the diffusion distance at the gills.
