Notes: Abstract Total interaction cross sections have been measured for8Li on C and Pb targets, for9Li on C, Al, Cu, Sn and Pb targets as well as for11Li on C, Sn and Pb targets. For each beam, we also used a plastic scintillator as target. The measurements with the scintillator targets are used to extract reduced nuclear radii of the lithium isotopes. These radii are then used for the calculation of the nuclear part of the total cross section for the other targets. The total electromagnetic-dissociation (EMD) cross sections have been deduced and are compared to different models. A strong target-charge-dependent EMD cross section is measured for11Li reaching 2.96 −0.82 +0.84 b for the Pb target. In the9Li case, a large EMD cross section for high-Z targets has been observed which amounts to 0.75 ± 0.45 b for the Pb target. The EMD cross sections of both,9Li and11Li, may be understood by the giantdipole-resonance model.

Notes: Abstract Caustic burns of the upper aerodigestive tract continue to be a significant clinical problem. However, the available literature uncommonly mentions changes affecting the larynx. We could find only one publication in which four cases of high hypopharyngeal stenosis were described in detail and where the functional outcome of the laryngeal function was stated as partially saved. We describe here a case of total retrocricoid stenosis in a 28-year-old woman that was caused by lye ingestion. A life-saving gastroesophagectomy was performed by the Department of General Surgery. Reconstruction of the esophagus was carried out with mobilized right colon, which was meticulously sutured circumferentially behind the arytenoids and on the prevertebral fascia. The anatomy of the larynx and its nerve supply were scrupulously maintained intact. We believe that our patient’s rehabilitation was due mainly to an intensive 18-month program of care, following which all laryngeal functions recovered with normal voice and swallowing patterns.

Notes: Abstract Secondary beams have been produced through interaction of a 1760 MeV Ar beam with a 99 mg/cm2 Be target. An achromatic spectrometer is used to select the magnetic rigidity corresponding to a given beam, and to transport this beam over a distance of about 18m. The beam purity is studied using a solid state ΔE-E telescope. Beams of38S and39Cl are produced with a purity of about 80%, and production rates of 1.5·10−6 I0 and 5·10−5 Io respectively. Here I0 denotes the primary beam intensity. Beams of38Ar,39Ar and41K are produced with about the same abundances as39Cl but with lower purities. It is shown that, by setting properly the experimental parameters, the beam production can be improved by a factor 2 to 5. This could lead to intensities of about 2·106 pps for38S, and of 107 to 108 pps for the four other beams. The possibility of purifying these beams by placing a degrader between the two dipoles of the spectrometer is shown experimentally.

Notes: Abstract Total charge-changing cross sections have been measured for8Li on C and Pb targets, for9Li on C, Al, Cu, Sn and Pb targets, as well as for11Li on C, Sn and Pb targets at about 80 MeV/nucleon. These data are compared to measured total reaction cross sections and Glauber-type calculations using Hartree-Fock density distributions. These comparisons allow to draw conclusions on the proton density distribution of the neutronrich lithium isotopes. The results show that even for the most exotic nucleus11Li the proton distribution is only very weakly influenced by the long tail in the neutron density distribution already established in several experiments.
