Notes: Abstract The new proton-rich nucleus104Sn was produced in a50Cr(58Ni, 2p2n)104Sn reaction. Its half-life was measured to be 21±1s. From a newly established partial decay scheme, aQ EC value of 4,000 −300 +650 keV was estimated. The resulting mass excess value for104Sn, combined with decay energies for α and proton emission, leads to mass excess values for the nuclei108Te,109I,112Xe, and113Cs. These mass values are compared to predictions of mass formulae.

Notes: Abstract With the use of the58Ni+50Cr fusion-evaporation reaction and chemically selective on-line mass separation, the EC/β + decay of104Sn was studied byγ-ray and conversionelectron spectroscopy. In the course of these studies, a new 15.7-s isomeric state of104In was observed. Reinvestigation of theβ-decays of the two heavier even isotopes of tin, produced in the58Ni+58Ni reaction and mass separated without chemical discrimination, brought new information on the decay of106Sn and108Sn. The QEC values of104Sn,106Sn and108Sn were determined to be 4550 −250 +300 keV, 3200±100 keV and 〈 2270 keV, respectively. In the data analysis, the emphasis is put on the identification of the 0+ → 1+ Gamow-Tellerβ transitions and determination of their strengths. For104−110Sn, the total Gamow-Teller strengths are measured to be 20% to 30% of that predicted by the single-particle shell model with the inclusion of pairing correlations and core polarization. Predictions of the decay properties of the as yet unobserved102Sn and100Sn are made.

Notes: Abstract Using the40Ca(4.2 MeV/u) +60Ni reaction and on-line mass separation, the decay properties of 46 96 Pd50 were reinvestigated. From a comparison of experimental and theoreticalβ +/(EC +β +) probability ratios, theQ EC value was deduced to be 3,450 ± 150 keV. The strength was determined for four 0+→1+ Gamow-Teller beta transitions and found to be quenched as compared to predictions of the single-particle shell model. For96Pd and94Ru the sources of this quenching are discussed.

Notes: Abstract We report here on the measurement of isotope shift and hyperfine splitting of190, 191, 193, 197Pb for the 723 nm atomic optical transition. Detailed analysis of the optical data has been done by combining them with the available muonic and electronicx-ray isotope shift data. The magnetic dipole moments and the electric quadrupole moments of the odd isotopes have been extracted from the hyperfine coupling constants of the atomic states involved in the optical transition used.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine structure, isotope and isomeric shifts in the atomic transition 6p 2 P 3/2−7s 2 S 1/2, λ=535 nm have been measured for theI=7 andI=2 states of190, 192, 194, 196Tl; theI=1/2 andI=9/2 states of191Tl and the I=7 isomer of188Tl. The thallium isotopes were prepared as fast atomic beams at the GSI on-line mass separator following fusion reactions and — in some cases — subsequentβ-decay. The nuclear dipole moments, electric quadrupole moments and the change in the nuclear mean square charge radius are evaluated. Theuu-isotopes show an isomeric shift which changes sign between192Tl and194Tl.

Notes: The corrosion behavior of materials in the production of wet process phosphoric acid is a function of acid concentration, temperature and purity. The effects vary depending on the type of process and raw materials used to manufacture phosphoric acid.Laboratory corrosion studies are presented for several nickel-rich alloys in pure C. P. grade and wet process phosphoric acid manufactured by the sulfuric acid digestion of phosphate rock. The low concentration (30 010 P20,) acids contain contaminants which make the acid more corrosive than the 56O10 P, O, phosphoric acid. At moderate sorption temperatures (〈 140 °C) several nickel-rich alloys demonstrated excellent corrosion resistance.Hot wall corrosion tests were employed to simulate heat transfer conditions in superphosphoric acid processes. The hot wall tests demonstrated excellent correlation between the metal skin temperature and the resulting corrosion rate of the specimen. Excessive corrosion rates were experienced with the nickel-rich alloys at metal skin temperatures 〉145°C with the crude phosphoric acids. Electrochemical studies were used to demonstrate that the crude acid can become unstable at elevated temperatures and result in excessively high cor-rosion attack of the nickel-rich alloys. Hastelloy alloy G and Haynes alloy No. 625 demonstrated best overall corrosion resistance in the wet process acids, especially at higher temperatures.

Notes: Equipment made of NiCrMo alloys of the Ni 16 Cr 16 Mo W and Ni 22 Cr 16 Mo types is used extensively in the chemical industry, in particular because the corrosion resistance in the as-welded condition could be improved in recent years by controlling C and Si contents to very low levels. A new type of alloy  -  Hastelloy Developmental Alloy C-455  -  has high resistance to carbide and intermetallic phase precipitation at high temperatures. By reducing the amount of these phases it has been possible to considerably improve the high temperature properties, the corrosion resistance and the mechanical properties of the alloy. The new material may be exposed to sensitizing range temperatures (550-1090 °C) for a long time without becoming susceptible to corrosion: it is, therefore, readily weldable. Contrary to NiCrMo alloys known so far there are almost no problems when the material is exposed to hydrochloric and sulfuric acids.

Description / Table of Contents: Based on the mathematical model described in part 1 a method for determining elastic modulus and viscosity characteristics as well as examples of application are described. By simulation calculations representing steady and disturbed states of the drawing process the applicability of the model is demonstrated and some practical conclusions are drawn.
