Notes: Summary Intercolonial differences in raiding activity were investigated in the field on 9 colonies of the slavemaking antPolyergus samurai. Duration of raiding season, the mean start time of the first raiding trip in a day, the mean speed of outbound and inbound trips, and the mean distance to target nests varied significantly among colonies. The variance in start time of raiding was correlated with that in soil temperature and diurnal change pattern in soil temperature at the nest sites. The speed of trips and the first day with trips in the season also correlated with soil temperature at the nest site. Simple environmental factors well explained the observed variances in raiding activity among colonies. Therefore, raiding behaviour ofP. samurai seemed to be a stereotyped behaviour that is regulated through simple environmental factors.

Notes: Summary Raiding behavior of the Japanese slave-making antPolyergus samurai was investigated in the field. Raiding trips occurred from early June to early September. A raiding column of several hundreds workers would rush into a target nest and rob mainly worker pupae of the host species,Formica (Serviformica) japonica. Most trips occurred on sunny days. Air temperature, soil temperature, relative humidity, and radiation energy at the ground surface were significantly different between days with and without raiding trips. Nuptial flights occurred on hot, sunny days, and mostPolyergus colonies released alates simultaneously. Behaviors of newly mated queens are also provided and are compared with otherPolyergus species.

Notes: Abstract An anticancer antibiotic, neocarzinostatin (NCS), was covalently conjugated to the murine monoclonal antibody A7 (mAb A7), which recognizes the glycoprotein on the cell surface of human colon cancer. The biological and pharmacological properties of the conjugate (A7-NCS) were examined and compared with those of unconjugated NCS. A7-NCS exhibited a strong binding and cytotoxicity to the cell and an antigen-specific tumor accumulation. Significant tumoricidal effects in vivo were observed in the antigen-positive tumor-bearing mice treated with A7-NCS, whereas NCS mixed with mAb A7 and NCS alone were relatively ineffective. In the antigennegative tumor, the tumoricidal effect of A7-NCS was lower than in the antigen-positive tumor. The NCS concentration in blood and tumor were significantly elevated by conjugation to mAb A7. The NCS localization in tumor was higher in the antigen-positive tumor than in the antigen-negative tumor. Death due to acute toxicity was observed at a dose of 20 units (U) NCS in mice treated with unconjugated NCS, whereas toxicity was seen with a much higher dose of NCS (100 U) if the drug was conjugated to the mAb. These findings show that mAb A7 confers more favorable pharmacological properties on an anticancer drug, making it potentially more useful for cancer chemotherapy.

Notes: Abstract By using the spin-polarized DV-Xα-LCAO method, electronic states of neutral and cationic Mn N clusters (N=2∼5) are calculated to study atomic bonding of Mn clusters. For the neutral Mn2 cluster, the equilibrium interatomic distance is much larger than that of the bulk crystal. The 3d-derived states are nearly half-filled, and the 4s-derived states are almost fully occupied,i.e. the electronic configuration is close to that of the isolated atom. These indicate that the Mn2 cluster is bound by the van der Waals force. The same situation is true for the larger neutral clusters while the equilibrium interatomic distance becomes smaller and thes-d mixing becomes larger. For the cationic clusters, the behaviors tend to become metallic. The equilibrium interatomic distances are smaller and thes-d mixings are larger than those of the corresponding neutral clusters. However, the Mn 2 + and Mn 4 + clusters still remain the van der Waals characters. Contrary to these clusters, the Mn 5 + cluster, whose interatomic distance is smaller than that of the bulk crystal, shows strong metallic bonding. These results seem to correspond to the magic number observed on the mass spectroscopy of cationic Mn clusters.

Notes: Abstract Electronic states of Mn n + microclusters forn=4∼7 are calculated by the spin-polarized DV-Xα-LCAO method. The energy levels of valence electrons are composed of two parts, the dense levels which contain much 3d electron components and the sparse levels which contain much 4s electron components. The distribution of the 4s electron levels roughly corresponds to that of one-electron orbitals in the shell model. The highest occupied level of the Mn 5 + microcluster is located at a 4s electron level, which is filled with electrons, whereas those of the other microclusters are located at partially filled 4s levels or at dense 3d levels. These results explain the origin of the magic numbers observed in Mn cation microclusters.
