Notes: Abstract  The goal of this work was to evaluate the costs and benefits of percutaneous interventional radiological procedures (PIRP) in terminal cancer patients, from the perspective of the Radiodiagnostics Department. The subjects were 225 patients who underwent different kinds of treatments, such as placement of endovenous or urinary stents, percutaneous gastrostomy, alcoholization of metastatic disease, celiac plexus block, tumor embolization, and inferior vena caval filter. We retrospectively analyzed the consequences in terms of survival, quality of life and cost ratios and found that this study fully justifies the use of interventional radiology in palliative oncology: 60% and 40% of the patients, respectively, were still alive at 1 month and 3 months; the additional cost of PIRP procedures is low (〈12%) compared with the total cost of hospitalization.

Notes: Abstract. The authors describe the discovery of ascending colonic variceal veins via celiomesenteric diagnostic angiography following a bout of melena in a 44-year-old woman. Magnetic resonance imaging, including phase-contrast MR venography, allowed visualization of the portal and systemic veins immediately after the initial angiograms. The hemorrhagic episode did not resolve until after transjugular intrahepatic shunt insertion and selective variceal embolization through the shunt. At 1 week-, 3 months-, and 6 months post treatment, follow-up MR venography no longer revealed the presence of colonic varices. Colonoscopy at 6 months was normal and the patient did not have any further episodes of bleeding until a liver transplantation was performed after 9 months.

Notes: Abstract The natural width of a hypersatellite line (K −2→K −1 L −1 transition) has been measured for the first time. In the case of Cu (Z=29) this width has been found equal toΓ = 5 eV, i.e. much larger than that of the diagram (K −1→L −1) line. This result follows a proposed empirical law assuming this width to be equal to 3Γ K+ΓL.
