    Notes: Abstract The hyperfine structure of various absorption lines of molecular iodine with wavenumbers between 12980 and 13890 cm−1 has been resolved using Doppler-free polarization spectroscopy. The wavenumbers of theo-component of 17 rovibrational lines of I2 due to the transitionB 3Π ou + −X1∑ g + with even rotational quantum numbers have been determined with an accuracy of 0.001 cm−1. A comparison of the centers of gravity of these 17 lines with the values of the iodine atlas of Gerstenkorn et al. yields a difference of $$\delta \tilde v = \tilde v_{c.g} - \tilde v_{atl} = - (1.8 \pm 1.2)x 10 - 3 cm^{ - 3}$$ thus corroborating the data of the iodine atlas in the red region within limits of error.

    Notes: Abstract Large helium clusters, ranging in size from a few hundred to several thousand atoms, are produced in a nozzle expansion. Combining this source with a pick-up scattering cell in which the clusters can be seeded with chromophores allows us to probe the influence of the helium environment on the atoms and molecules attached to the clusters. Using an alkali as chromophore we recorded laser induced fluorescence spectra of Na atoms and molecules attached to helium clusters. Apart from the spectrum of the Na monomer, we have found spectroscopic bands which can unambiguous be assigned to two bound Na atoms. The first of this bands is due to 11 ∑ μ + (A) ← 11 ∑ g + (X) excitations of the covalently bound singlet Na2 molecule while the second is due to 13 ∑ g + ← 13 ∑ μ + excitations for the van der Waals bound triplet Na2 dimer. Both bands have been vibrationally resolved. Furthermore we found very large fluorescence intensities in the region 605–635 nm which are likely due to the excitation of a species containing three Na atoms attached to a helium cluster.

    Notes: Abstract Microwave optical polarization spectroscopy has been used to measure the hyperfine structure in theX 2 Σ + (v=0) electronic ground state of Sr79Br and Sr81Br. Optical hyperfine structure in theB 2 Σ +−X 2 Σ + (0,0) system was resolved by Doppler-free laser polarization spectroscopy. The magnetic hyperfine parametersb andc and the electricquadrupole hfs parametereqQ were determined for theX 2 Σ + andB 2 Σ + states of both molecules. The magnetic hfs has been interpreted as an effect of halide electron spin polarization. The electric quadrupole coupling constants are compared with the alkali halides and discussed in terms of Sternheimer antishielding in polar molecules.

    Notes: The dissolution kinetics of alumina in aqueous solution was studied in batch and continuous systems. Data were correlated by the kinetic equation C(t) = 1 - exp(-ktα). The parameter k was a function of temperature and acid concentration, while the parameter α remained constant.The temperature variation of k was accurately represented by an Arrhenius-type equation with a temperature coefficient, 18,200 kJ/kmol. The data obtained in batch experiments were free of mass transport and mixing effects. Adsorption-desorption equilibrium of hydrogen ion at the alumina surface was observed. The results supported postulated reactions reported in the literature for alumina dissolution. The basic features of the mechanism include hydration of the aluminum oxide surface, hydrogen ion adsorption followed by reaction to form a positively charged surface species [Al(OH)2+], formation of stable surface species [AlOOH and (Al(OH)2)2 SO4], and desorption of products.
