Notes: Abstract It is demonstrated that a combination of resonant multiphoton ionization and stimulated Raman scattering, known as the “ion-dip” method, can generate Raman signals at very low densities. Using thev 1 mode of benzene at 3075 cm−1, we show that even with moderate laser power, Raman spectroscopy with nonresonant excitation can be performed at densities of 1011 mol/cm3 or 4×10−9 bar, several orders of magnitude lower than with any other type of Raman scattering. The possibility of Raman spectroscopy of atomic and molecular clusters is discussed.
