Notes: Abstract Urinary recovery and serum determination of Paba were carried out in 48 control children (C) and 53 paediatric patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) divided into three classes by age. Ninety and 120 min after the ingestion of 15 mg/kg of BT-Paba and of a standard meal, serum Paba was determined. In the same subjects the percentage Paba recovery was measured in the urine collected during an 8 h period after the same administration of BT-Paba. Correlation between urinary and serum Paba values was higher in the older children in respect to the 0–2-year-old infants. A urinary Paba test was less sensitive and specific than a serum Paba test in the evaluation of exocrine pancreatic function. The best discrimination between C and children with CF, using the maximal value of serum Paba at 90 or 120 min (peak), was obtained in the younger infants (0–2 years old). BT-Paba test with serum Paba peak determination is recommended as a substitute for the classical urinary Paba test in the evaluation of exocrine pancreatic function in paediatric patients, especially in the younger infants.

Notes: Abstract  The aim of this study was to clarify the inheritance of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) in the ectomycorrhizal basidiomycete Laccaria bicolor S238N in order to resolve inter- and within-strain relationships in forest ecosystems. PCR amplification of the intergenic spacer (IGS) was carried out in the dikaryotic mycelium and its haploid progeny. In the dikaryotic mycelium, multiple amplification products were produced for the 25s/5s (IGS1) and 5s/17s (IGS2) intergenic spacers. The 4.5- and 4.0-kb fragments of IGS2 (haplotypes α and β, respectively) were observed to occur in a 1:1 ratio within the haploid progeny as a result of divergent IGS haplotypes in the two separate nuclei. Recombinant monokaryons having both types of IGS2 occurred at a low frequency (6.5%; 60 kb per centimorgan) during meiosis. Haplotypes α and β of IGS1 cross-hybridized forming heteroduplexes during the PCR temperature cycle. The two IGS1 haplotypes differed only by the repeat number of a TA2C3 motif and co-segregated with the IGS2 haplotypes. Heteroduplex formation and IGS polymorphism provide information that is helpful in distinguishing between introduced exotic L. bicolor S238N and indigenous populations of Laccaria spp. in forest ecosystems.

Notes: Abstract We have studiedK-shell ionization induced by 30 MeV/u Ne and Ar projectiles on target atoms with atomic numbers ranging from 27 to 90. X-ray production cross sections and energy shifts were measured with Si(Li) detectors. In most cases satisfactory agreement between measurements and theoretical direct ionization cross sections is obtained when the contribution of electron capture is included. The influence of multiple ionization on the fluorescence yield ω K is discussed.
