Poly-[2,2′;-(m-phenylen)-5,5′-bisbenzimidazol] (PBI) wurde ursprünglich als faserbildendes Polymeres für militärische Anwendungen entwickelt. Die später festgestellte Nichtentflammbarkeit (LOI 48%) und hohe Wasseraufnahme (13%) erweiterten die möglichen Anwendungsbereiche beträchtlich, z. B. auf dem Gebiet der Schutzanzüge. In jüngster Zeit wurden PBI-Folien und Hohlfasern erfolgreich als Membranen für die Reversosmose in der Entsalzung von Brack- und Meerwasser eingesetzt.

Poly-[2,2′-(m-phenylene)-5,5′-bisbenzimidazole] (PBI) was originally developed as a fiber-forming polymer for military applications. The eventually established intrinsic nonflammability (LOI 48%) and high moisture regain (13%) expanded application areas significantly; e.g., into protective suits. More recently, PBI flat membranes and hollow fils were successfully tested as reverse osmosis membranes in brine and sea water desalination.
