Notes: Summary Five new antagonists of Substance P were designed and synthesized toward increasing potency and safety. One of them was more effective than Spantide II, which was the basis for the design. It was named Spantide III and has the structure: D-NicLys,Pro,Pal,Pro,D-Cl2Phe,Asn,D-Trp,Phe,D-Pal,Leu, NleNH2.

Notes: Abstract The effects of background gases on the optical emission of the excimer-laser-ablated plume from a brass target have been studied experimentally. It is found that the plume emission can be enhanced significantly in a proper gas ambient. In hydrogen, the highest peak intensity is detected, and in argon, there is a distinctive difference in the pressure-dependent emission between in He and in the other three gases, Ar, N2 and H2. Moreover, the monitored line peak intensity remains unchanged in Ar and N2 and increases in H2 within a distance above the target surface; but in He, the observed peak intensity decreases with distance like in vacuum. Furthermore, the emissions of several more atomic lines of Cu and Zn atoms from the plume are also found to be enhanced in the same manner in gas ambient. Some physical processes involved in the plume expansion and the possible mechanisms for the enhanced emission of the plume in backing gas are discussed.

Notes: The retention behaviour of conjugated bile acids has been studied in a reversed phase high performance liquid chromatographic (RP-HPLC) system by using the mixture of methanol and aqueous phosphate buffer as the mobile phase. The retentions of the conjugates in RP-HPLC have been found to be mainly controlled by the glycine and taurine groups. The selectivity between five different glycine and taurine conjugated bile acids is a constant in RP-HPLC. This selectivity has been used for peak identification in the practical separation of conjugated bile acids.

Notes: A reversed phase high performance liquid chromatographic method for the high sensitivity determination of individual bile acids in serum using a C18 column with a ternary solvent system combined with fluorometric techniques using immobilized enzymes is described. A computer-assisted diagnosis system using pattern recognition was developed to assist the clinical diagnosis of various liver and biliary diseases. A total consistency rate of 95% can be reached using this system.

Notes: The synthesis of a novel bisphenol, 9,9-bis(3,5-diphenyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene, in high yield by the transalkylation of 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene is described. Three poly(arylene ether)s based on this hindered phenol were prepared with molecular weights (Mn) ranging from 34 800 to 51 300 and inherent viscosities ranging from 0.27 to 0.43 dL/g. The polymers have Tg's of 236-262°C and did not lose weight below 350°C, with 10% weight loss recorded above 550°C. They are readily soluble in chlorinated solvents such as methylene chloride, chloroform, and 1,2-dichloroethane at room temperature. Attempts to synthesize an analogous monomer, bis (3,5-diphenyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)diphenylmethane, are described.

Notes: A linear, high molecular weight polyformal is readily synthesized by direct transformation of commercially available polycarbonate. The reaction is best carried out in dibromomethane with 8.0 equiv. of potassium hydroxide pellets in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst at 90-95°C. A random copoly(carbonate formal) can also be obtained simply by reducing the amount of potassium hydroxide used in the reaction. The molecular weight of the resulting polymer is governed by the starting polycarbonate.
