    Notes: Replicas of a mask are etched in Si wafers with a micrometer lateral resolution and typical depths of 200 nm by irradiation with filtered synchrotron radiation using cutoff wavelengths of 105, 122, and 150 nm. An excellent selectivity and anisotropy is obtained by suppressing the spontaneous etching of the XeF2 etch gas (typical 10−2 mbar) with O2 or Ar buffer gas (typical 1 mbar). The efficiency of etching increases by more than two orders of magnitude by reducing the wavelength from longer than 150 nm to the spectral range of 105–122 nm. The number of removed Si atoms per incident photon reaches a value above unity for the short wavelengths. This very high quantum efficiency, which exceeds that in the visible spectral range by more than four orders of magnitude, is attributed to selective electronic excitation of a thin fluorosilyl layer on top of the Si wafer. The low probability of absorption in this layer implies a reaction efficiency far above unity. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Pairs of vertical Bloch lines (VBL) stabilized by a periodic in-plane field potential are the storage elements in the Bloch line memory concept. Wall resonance spectroscopy (WRS) is used for the verification of VBL's in a wall section equivalent to one memory cell of a locally stabilized stripe domain. This corresponds to an area of about 5×5 μm in a 5-μm bubble garnet film. The sequential VBL propagation induced by z-field pulsing was demonstrated directly by means of a simple test chip with current VBL confinement, and a current loop for the drive pulses as main features. VBL detection is simply carried out by exciting the domain wall, which resonance signal vanishes when a VBL is present. The stripe is stabilized inside a 10% groove. Moreover, the local wall mass as well as the restoring constant could be inferred from the resonance line shape. The first WRS experiment with very high local resolution (2 μm) applied to localized stripe domains clearly demonstrates its potential usefulness for device testing, error mode detection, and optimization.

    Notes: Delayed pulsed field threshold ionization of clusters excited to high long-lived Rydberg states is used to study their dissociation behavior. Benzene–Ar and benzene–Kr dimers are excited by resonance enhanced two-photon ionization to Rydberg levels close to various ionization thresholds. The field ionized threshold ions are monitored and separated from the non-energy-selected ions in a reflecting field mass spectrometer with high mass resolution. The appearance of threshold ions at the daughter ion mass indicates the onset of a dissociation process. Daughter ions are first observed for the 16161(3/2) level of the two investigated dimers. This leads to an upper limit of the dissociation energy of benzene–Ar of 340 cm−1 which is probably higher than the true dissociation energy. For the first time threshold ions are observed for large internal energies of some 5 eV in the core indicating that high Rydberg states maintain their long lifetime even if the core is electronically or vibrationally excited by several eV.

    Notes: In this work the metastable decay of heterogeneous benzene/toluene, benzene/cyclohexane, and benzene/para-difluorobenzene van der Waals cluster ions [(MiNk)+ with n=i+k〈12] is investigated. Two-photon ionization leads to an internal energy of less than 1.5 eV. On the 100 μs time scale of the linear reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer used in this work, the main dissociation process of the cluster ions is the evaporation of a single molecule. A uniform decay behavior is observed for benzene/toluene and benzene/cyclohexane cluster ions; the only dissociation pathway being the evaporation of a single benzene or cyclohexane molecule, respectively. By contrast, the evaporation of either a benzene or a para-difluorobenzene molecule is observed for benzene/para-difluorobenzene cluster ions, depending on the size and the composition of the heterocluster. We apply an energetic model to explain the observed dissociation pathways. This model assumes the total miscibility of the different molecular species and a total dilution of charge. Despite these assumptions, the model predictions are in good agreement with our experimental data.

    Notes: Slow metastable fragmentation of benzene/toluene and benzene/para-difluorobenzene clusters is observed in a newly developed linear reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer after two-photon ionization. The breakdown of the metastable intensity with decreasing two-photon energy is measured and yields the appearance potential for the main dissociation channels of the homo- and the heterodimers. Based on these values, the dissociation energies of the neutral dimers are obtained and shown to be consistent with the changes of the polarizability and dipole moment of the components. In addition, from the appearance potentials and the measured ionization potentials, the dissociation energies of the charged dimer clusters are found. The binding energies of the heterocluster ions and the para-difluorobenzene homodimer ion are smaller than the respective binding energies in the benzene and toluene homodimer ions. This is explained by a larger contribution of charge transfer resonance interaction to the binding energy of the latter homodimer ions. On the basis of these results we present an energetic scheme for prediction of the dissociation pathways of the trimer ions in agreement with the measured results.

    Notes: Radiation losses from the JET plasma are measured (temporally and spatially resolved) with three pin-hole cameras which observe one poloidal plasma cross section from underneath (one vertical camera with 14 bolometers) and from the side (two horizontal cameras with 10 bolometers each). In addition, eight collimated single bolometers monitor toroidal symmetry of plasma emissivity. An improved metal resistor bolometer capable of surviving at least 5000 D–T pulses in JET is composed of two identical foils (4-μm-thick gold absorber, 7.5-μm-thick Kapton substrate, and 0.1-μm-thick gold resistor), mounted one behind another in one housing. The rear foil serves as a reference bolometer in a bridge circuit. With an integration time constant of 20 ms a detection limit of 70 μW/cm2 was measured in JET. Examples of measuring results in JET are presented: strong poloidal asymmetries of the radiation density as precursor signals of a density limit disruption and the formation of a poloidally symmetric, cold plasma mantle before a disruption.

    Notes: The components of the first 50 MeV accelerator in the chain of injectors to the 820 GeV HERA proton ring are described including the high energy transport line. An H− beam originates in the cesium loaded magnetron source, is preaccelerated by a radio frequency quadrupole to 750 keV, raised to 50 MeV energy in three rf resonators, and is analyzed in the transport line. The H− ions are converted to protons by stripping, when the beam is injected over several turns into the synchrotron DESY3.

    Notes: By employing high-temperature superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometers, we have assembled a second-order gradiometer for magnetocardiography (MCG) in unshielded environment. With this high-temperature superconductor (HTS) SQUID system, we demonstrated its diagnostic relevance for MCG in terms of signal-to-noise ratio, spatial resolution, frequency bandwidth, rejection of environmental disturbances, and long-term stability. The electronically balanced gradiometer consists of three HTS radio-frequency SQUIDs with superconducting coplanar resonators, mounted in axial gradiometric arrangement with a baseline of 7.5 cm. The system achieves a common mode rejection for axial homogeneous fields of about 104 without any mechanical balancing, and a white noise about 130 fT/(square root of)Hz at 77 K, with an 8×8 mm2 flux pickup area. MCG maps above volunteers' chests have been recorded in unshielded environment in a bandwidth of about 130 Hz. We showed the influence of several notch filters (suppressing the power line frequency) on the quality of the MCG signals. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have developed a matching scheme for the operation of a rf superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) with a lumped-element tank circuit at pumping frequencies up to 1 GHz. This conventional LC resonant circuit is inductively coupled to a matching coil, which is connected to the 50 Ω transmission line. We characterized the flux noise of high-temperature rf SQUIDs at resonant frequencies between 221 and 950 MHz. At about 900 MHz, we obtained the white flux noise of about 14.6 μφ0/Hz with a SQUID inductance LS=150 pH and 20 μφ0/Hz with LS=260 pH. Several of such tank circuits can be driven in parallel or in series with only one cable. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
