Notes: Abstract Eight healthy subjects were exposed to three 1/3 octave-band vibrations (63, 200, and 500 Hz) by hand clasping a vibrated handle in a soundproof and thermoregulated room. The vibratory sensation threshold at 125 Hz was measured before and after the vibration exposure at an exposed fingertip. According to a preceding study, we first determined the relationship between the acceleration of the vibration and the temporary threshold shift of vibratory sensation immediately after the vibratory exposure (TTSv,0) induced by 1/3 octave-band vibration. We then measured TTSv after the exposure to a composite vibration composed of two 1/3 octave-band vibrations that might induce an equal magnitude of TTSv,0 on the basis of the above relationship. The TTSv,0 induced by the composite vibration was not larger than the TTSv,0 induced by the component vibrations. This result suggests that the component of the vibration inducing the largest TTSv,0 determines the TTSv,0 by broad-band random vibration.

Notes: Abstract A single picosecond ultraviolet pulse has been generated based on mode-locking of a dye laser pumped by a long pulse XeCl laser to serve as the input source for a high-power ps KrF laser system. A short-pulse uv dye laser (BBQ) pumped by an additional XeCl laser was used to selectively amplify a single pulse from a mode-locked pulse train with the pulse separation of 3.2 ns. The amplified single pulse was frequency-doubled to 248 nm with the pulse duration of 20 ps.

Notes: Abstract A 180-fs UV pulse has been generated based on a hybrid synchronously pumped mode-locked dye laser for a multiterawatt KrF laser system. The pulse width was measured by the single shot autocorrelation technique with the three-photon fluorescence of the XeF C-A transition. The pulse width broadening due to dispersive media was investigated. The results show that the observed pulse width broadening from 210 fs to 390 fs through the entire system is explained mostly by the linear dispersion of the optical elements for near-transform-limited input pulses.

Notes: Abstract Pain occurs in more than 80% of cancer patients before death. During recent years major progress has taken place in our techniques for the adequate assessment of cancer pain. Major prognostic factors associated with the pain syndrome have been recognized. In addition, other prognostic factors associated with the characteristics of the patient have been defined. Valid tools have been developed that allow for the assessment of most of the prognostic variables associated with analgesic response. During recent years a major effort has been made to integrate the pain syndrome within the other complex symptoms that are often present in patients with advanced cancer. The interaction of pain and analgesic treatment with other symptoms and their management is discussed. Finally, areas where future research should focus in the area of the diagnosis and assessment of pain are discussed.
