Notes: Abstract We have analyzed and measured the thermal lens of the copper-vapor laser by considering both its windows and active medium. The equivalent combined focal length varies with operation parameters and it is sensitive to the laser geometry. The results are verified by our measurements on a 20 W device with 35 mm internal diameter tube. The thermal lens effects on the beam properties are analyzed and verified with the experiments for both oscillator and laser chain case.

Notes: Abstract This study was conducted to investigate the effects of aging on collagen and collagenase expression by human dermal fibroblasts. To evaluate this effect, the expression of these ECM was determined and compared between either fetal and adult fibroblasts or dermal fibroblasts at various passages. A total of 13 cell strains, 8 fetal foreskin and 5 adult dermal fibroblasts, were grown to 80-90% confluency and their rates of cell proliferation and expression of mRNA for collagenase (MMP-1) and pro α1(I) chain of type I collagen was determined and compared. Fetal cells had a significantly higher rate of proliferation relative to adult fibroblasts evaluated within 10 days of culture. Northern analysis was used to evaluate the steady state levels of mRNA in these cells. The result of these experiments revealed a significantly greater expression of mRNA for collagenase (58.6 ± 7.7 vs. 9.9 ± 1.5, p 〈 0.05) in strains of adult fibroblasts. This was consistent with collagenase activity of conditioned medium derived from adult cells relative to fetal fibroblasts. However the expression of pro α1(I) chain of type I collagen mRNA was not significantly (56.2 ± 5.2 vs. 58.5 ± 3.5) different between adult and fetal fibroblasts. This finding was confirmed by measuring total collagen production present in conditioned medium of these cells using hydroxyproline as an index for collagen production. The cellular response to IGF-1 and IFN-α2b as representatives of fibrogenic and anti-fibrogenic factors were also evaluated. When expression of collagenase was used as an indication for cellular response, the degree of this response to IGF-1 but not IFN-α2b was significantly greater in fetal relative to adult cells. Serial passage was also used as an in vitro model for aging fibroblasts and found a gradual reduction in pro α1(I) chain of type I collagen mRNA and hydroxyproline formation due to passaging. In conclusion, a slower rate of proliferation, a greater collagenase activity and expression of collagenase mRNA by aging fibroblasts could be some of the main reasons for attenuation of wound healing in elderly patients.

Notes: Poly(silylenemethylene)s of the types [SiMeRCH2]n and [SiHRCH2]n were prepared by the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of 1,3-disilacyclobutanes (DSCBs) containing n-alkyl substituents, such as C2H5, n-C3H7, n-C4H9, n-C5H11, and n-C6H13, or a phenyl group on the Si. These new polymers include a monosilicon analog of poly(styrene), [SiHPhCH2]n. Improved synthesis routes to the DSCB monomers were developed which proceed through Grignard ring closure reactions on alkoxy-substituted chlorocarbosilanes. All of these asymmetrically substituted polymers were obtained in high molecular weight form, except for [SiHPhCH2]n. The configurations of all of the polymers were found to be atactic. The aryl-substituted polymers have higher glass transition temperatures (Tgs) and thermal stability than those of the alkyl-substituted poly(silylenemethylene)s. Unlike the polyolefins of the type [C(H)(R)CH2]n, where Tg drops continuously from R = Me to n-Hex, the Tgs of the n-CnH2n+1 (n = 2-6)-substituted [SiMeRCH2]n PSM's appear to reach a maximum (at -61°C) for the R = n-Pr-substituted polymer. Moreover, where it was possible to make direct comparisons among similarly substituted atactic polymers, all of the poly(silylenemethylene)s were found to have lower Tgs than their all-carbon analogs. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
