Notes: Abstract We present a rigorous computation of the dynamical entropyh of the quantum Arnold cat map. This map, which describes a flow on the noncommutative two-dimensional torus, is a simple example of a quantum dynamical system with optimal mixing properties, characterized by Lyapunov exponents ± 1n λ+, λ+ 〉 1. We show that, for all values of the quantum deformation parameter,h coincides with the positive Lyapunov exponent of the dynamics.

Notes: The ultrastructural morphology and x-ray and electron diffraction of poly (Gly-Gly-Ala) have been studied. The polymer has two forms; the first, form I possesses a super-folded cross-β structure, long fibers of which show some twisting and intertwining. Form II precipitates in a less distinct fibrous form from aqueous solution. The x-ray diffraction and oriented electron diffraction data suggest that form II is a polyglycine II helix situated in a monoclinic cell with dimensions a = 8.86 Å, b = 22.0 Å, c = 9.42 Å, and β = 90°. Combined with the morphological evidence it appears likely that form II is also in an antiparallel superfolded array.

Notes: Spherulites of poly-L-proline II were grown by film casting from a dilute formic acid solution. Electron diffraction indicated that the molecular axis was parallel to the surface and essentially normal to the face of the lamellae. The molecular length was five times greater than the width of the lamellae. This is considered to he substantial evidence for the molecular folding of poly-L-proline II. A correlation between the molecular conformation of poly-L-proline in solution and the observed morphological form in the solid state has been determined. As the solution mutarotates from form I to form II, the solid morphology varies from an indistinetly shaped spherulite with little inner detail to a well formed crystalline spherulite complete with lamellae.

Notes: Single crystals of POAHP II were grown from acetic anhydride, a solvent in which POAHP I is thought to be stable. The single crystals gave an electron diffraction pattern which specified a hexagonal unit cell and the lateral spacing between molecular chains (11.4 Å). There is reasonable indication that molecular chain folding occurs in the POAHP single crystals. Epitaxial crystallization of POAHP II has been observed in the [100] and [320] directions on NaCl, [110] direction on KCl, and [100] direction on KI. Evidence indicates that the molecular axis is normal to the long axis of the POAHP needles and parallel to the substrate surface.
