Notes: Summary N2-Substituted 5-methylisocytidine derivatives were synthesized from S2-methyl-2-thiothymine either by direct substitution of the methylthio group by an amino group and subsequent condensation with 1,2,3,5-tetra-O-acetyl-β-D-ribofuranose to give the acetylated nucleoside or by the opposite sequence first preparing an acetylated 5,S2-dimethyl-2-thiouridine followed by treatment with the appropriate amine.

Notes: Summary The present paper is based on the results of a study conducted to examine whether there are any differences in sleep quality between permanent day workers and rotating shift workers working under two- and three-shift systems. Influences of demographic variables such as subjects' age and experience on sleep were also explored. The subjects studied consisted of 125 permanent day workers, 125 fortnightly rotating two-shift workers, and 50 weekly rotating three-shift workers. The method of data collection was that of field study through questionnaire. The results show that, compared to the permanent day workers, sleep quality is poorer for the rotating shift workers and, between the two groups of shift workers, it is poorer for the three-shift workers. These findings imply that a discontinuous two-shift system (without night work) is more convenient than a continuous three-shift system (including night work).

Notes: Summary The present study was designed to assess and compare the attitudes of permanent and rotating shift workers towards shift work and quality of life. The subjects studied consisted of 112 workers employed in a jute mill, working on permanent three-shift system, and 127 workers employed in a cigarette factory, working on a weekly rotating three-shift system. The results show that the permanent morning shift is the most preferred shift and the rotating shift is the least preferred shift system. Similarly the permanent morning shift workers reported the minimum number of specific problems. The results imply that the shift workers' attitude towards and satisfaction with shift work as well as their perception of the quality of life with regard to it are determined by a number of favourable and unfavourable specific experiences with regard to work and life in a shift working situation.
