Notes: Summary We consider a dynamical interacting particle system whose empirical distribution tends to the solution of a spatially homogeneous Boltzmann type equation, as the number of particles tends to infinity. These laws of large numbers were proved for the Maxwellian molecules by H. Tanaka [Tal] and for the hard spheres by A.S. Sznitman [Szl]. In the present paper we investigate the corresponding large deviations: the large deviation upper bound is obtained and, using convex analysis, a non-variational formulation of the rate function is given. Our results hold for Maxwellian molecules with a cutoff potential and for hard spheres.

Notes: Diffusion coefficients were determined gravimetrically for the diffusion of dioctyl phthalate into disks of suspension-polymerized poly(vinyl chloride) in the temperature range of 65-85°C. After an initial induction period, values of D were obtained which ranged from 10-10 to 10-8 cm.2/sec. and which gave an activation energy of 60 kcal./mole. The diffusion rates showed an inverse dependence on the number-average molecular weight of the poly(vinyl chloride), indicating that the chain ends are the primary point of attack in the diffusion process below the glass transition temperature.

Notes: Preparatory for the synthesis of terminally functional polyisobutylenes carrying one or two phenyl end groups, model experiments have been carried out using novel tert-butyl chloride/triphenylaluminum and 2,6-dichloro-2,6-dimethylheptane/triphenylaluminum initiating systems. As anticipated, t-BuCl was phenylated by ø3Al and the product is tert-butylbenzene. The reaction is extremely rapid and temperature has little effect on it in the 0 to -60°C range. The interaction between the 2,6-dichloro-2,6-dimethylheptane and ø3Al was found to be complicated by a proximity effect which leads to proton elimination in addition to phenylation. The formation of the desired diterminally phenylated product is not quanititative even at -60°C.
