    Notes: Abstract The evolution of the structural and magnetic properties of the CMR (colossal-magnetoresistance) compound La0.35Pr0.35Ca0.30MnO3 as the temperature changes from 10 to 293 K is investigated by means of neutron diffraction. It is shown that the changes in the transport and magnetic properties are directly related with the rearrangement of the atomic structure. A phase transition to the metallic state occurs together with simultaneous ferromagnetic ordering of the manganese moments and is accompanied by a jump in volume. The static distortions of the oxygen octahedra which are observed to occur prior to the magnetic phase transition and which are practically absent at room temperature and in the FM phase attest to the orbital ordering of oxygen atoms on the bonds, with freezing-in of the Jahn-Teller modes.

    Notes: Abstract A giant isotope effect, wherein the low-temperature metallic state is replaced by an insulator state, was recently observed when 18O was substituted for 16O in (La0.25Pr0.75)0.7Ca0.3MnO3 [N. A. Babushkina, L. M. Belova, O. Yu. Gorbenko et al., Nature (London) 391, 159 (1998)]. In the present work, the temperature evolution of the magnetic structure of two samples of this compound is studied by neutron diffraction. One sample contained a natural mixture of oxygen isotopes, 99.7% 16O, while the other was enriched to 75% with the isotope 18O. It is established that the samples are crystallographically identical at room temperature. As the temperature decreases, the sample with 16O undergoes successive antiferromagnetic (T AFM=5150 K) and ferromagnetic (T FM=110 K) transitions, which lead to the establishment of a noncollinear ferromagnetic structure, while a purely antiferromagnetic (T AFM=150 K) order arises in the sample with 18O. The temperature dependences of the intensities of the diffraction peaks associated with the charge ordering differ substantially in samples with 16O and 18O, and they correlate with the behavior of their electric resistance and magnetic structure.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The nitrogen content of 38 and 34 grain samples, in two separate experiments, was determined with the conventional micro-Kjeldahl method and with the indophenol colour reaction, manually as well as with an autoanalyzer. Values were found to be comparable. Details are presented for a simple and highly reproducible absorptiometric technique that is four times as rapid as conventional Kjeldahl. It should prove popular with plant breeders, agronomists and crop physiologists, who are interested in rapid and direct screening for nitrogen content but lack funds for automated equipment.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Der Stickstoffgehalt von 38 und 34 Proben wurde in zwei getrennten Experimenten sowohl manuell als auch mit einem Autoanalysator nach der herkömmlichen Mikro-Kjeldahl-Methode und mit der Indophenol-Farb-Reaktion bestimmt. Die gefundenen Werte waren vergleichbar. Die vorgestellte einfache und gut reproduzierbare, absorptionsphotometrische Technik ist um das Vierfache schneller als die herkömmliche Kjeldahl-Methode. Diese Methode kann Anwendung finden bei Pflanzenzüchtern und Pflanzenphysiologen, die an einer schnellen und direkten Selektionsmethode für den Stickstoffgehalt interessiert sind, ohne die finanziellen Möglichkeiten für eine automatisierte Ausrüstung zu besitzen.
