Notes: Summary The fine structure of the hypertrophic olive is reported in a case of progressive supranuclear palsy, the cause of which would be attributed to extensive symmetrical lesions in the dentate nuclei of the cerebellum and central tegmental tracts of the pons. Ultrastructurally, the enlarged neurons and their processes showed massive aggregations of neurofilaments, large accumulations of concentric laminated bodies, and occasional abnormal neurofibers (paired helical filaments and straight tubules). Their implications are briefly discussed in relation to olivary hypertrophy. Eosinophilic globules were seen in a neuron. Glomeruloid bodies were not seen.

Notes: Summary The fine structure of neurofibrillary tangles in the hippocampal gyrus, substantia nigra, pontine nuclei and locus coeruleus of the brain was postmortem studied in a case of progressive supranuclear palsy. Straight tubules and twisted tubules were observed in both the cortical and subcortical neurofibrillary tangles. Most tubules appeared separately in each neuron but a few straight tubules were mixed with the twisted tubules in the cortical tangles. The implication and possible significance of this findings are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The magnetic susceptibility X of superconducting La2−xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) was investigated over a wide x-range. The effective magnetic moment on the Cu-site of LSCO is progressively suppressed at x≳0.15 owing to deterioration of the localized character of Cu 3d-electrons, and the superconducting transition temperature Tc begins to decrease near x=0.15. The density of states at the Fermi level, estimated from the electronic specific heat or the T-independent spin part of X, is enhanced above x ∼0.15.
