Abstract The large low temperature peak in the microwave conductivity observed in the oxides has been interpreted in terms of the collapse of the inelastic scattering time brought about by the gapping of the fluctuation spectrum responsible for superconductivity. It is shown that this gapping also affects the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth and that it shows up clearly in the infrared conductivity.
