Notes: Abstract Forty-two cadaver knees were used for morphologic and MRI observations of the tendinous distal expansions of the semimembranosus m. and the posterior capsular structures of the knee. A tendinous branch of the semimembranosus m. inserting into the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus was found in 43.2% of the knees dissected, besides five already known insertional branches; capsular, direct, anterior and inferior, as well as the oblique popliteal ligament. The tendon had three morphologic types; thin, broad and round. All three types moved the lateral meniscus posteriorly when pulled on. Thus, the semimembranosus m. may also have a protective function for the lateral meniscus as well as the already well established function of protecting the medial meniscus in knee flexion. When a semimembranosus tendon attachment to the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus is present, its normal insertion is difficult to differentiate from a lateral meniscus tear in MRI and this may cause misdiagnosis.

Notes: Summary We found a left superficial ulnar artery in the cadaver of a Japanese woman. This anomalous vessel originated from the brachial artery at a site 55 mm distal to the inferior border of the teres major muscle and medial to the median nerve, ran downward and medially superficial to the forearm flexor muscles, and then downward to enter the hand. It formed superficial and deep palmar arches with the radial artery. The clinical importance of the anomalous ulnar artery is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Local magnetization measurements using micro Hall probes were carried out on a quasi two-dimensional organic superconductor κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2. Peak structures in the local magnetization hysteresis loops were found at around 50 G. We ascribe this anomaly to the field-induced decomposition of vortex lines into pancake vortices, which is found in a high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y. Mixed state phase diagram in κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 is compared with that in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y.

Notes: Abstract A cavity perturbation technique is used to measure the magnetic-field dependence of surface impedance at 24 and 41 GHz in superconducting κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 single crystals. A peak structure in the surface resistance Rs(H) is observed (1) below Tc, (2) when microwave electric field is perpendicular to the superconducting layer, and (3) at higher magnetic field for the lower measurement frequency (anticyclotronic behavior). These observations are identified as the Josephson plasma mode. The peak field increases as the temperature is lowered even below the irreversibility line in contrast to the case of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y.

Notes: Field desorption mass spectrometry (FDMS) was applied to the study of the initiation mechanism of thermal polymerization of styrenes. The FD mass spectrum was measured for a cooligomer of α,α,β-trideuterostyrene and p-methoxystyrene produced by thermal polymerization using ethylbenzene as a solvent, and this was compared with the spectrum of an oligomer of p-methoxystyrene. The above two FD mass spectra showed characteristic differences, depending upon the number of hydrogen and deuterium atoms and upon the presence or absence of the methoxy group, in the oligomers. Molecular species observed in the spectra were identified based on these considerations. As a result, we could distinguish the “true trimer” produced from three monomers from the “cross trimer” produced from fragments of five monomers. It was found that the “true trimer” was the major constituent in the trimer region, and that the “true trimer” was produced mainly by the cage reaction between initiating radicals.
