Notes: Abstract C70 single crystals, free from solvent contamination, were grown via vapor phase transport technique. The (0001) face of the C70 crystal was imaged with Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) under ambient atmosphere. Low-resolution images of a freshly prepared crystal revealed well-ordered faceted regions with multiple terraces extending over a region of several hundred square nanometers. The terraced structure in the images indicates that the crystals formed as a layer growth. In the high-resolution images, C70 molecules were resolved in a hexagonal close packed (hcp) structure with an average center-to-center distance of 10.5±0.5 Å. After one month's exposure to the ambient atmosphere, the molecules rearranged into a mixed structure consisting of hcp and face centered cubic (fcc) regions.

Notes: Abstract The topographic and electronic properties of the surfaces of (001) and (110) oriented YBa2Cu3Oy, epitaxial films have been probed by atomic resolution STM/STS at 4.2 K. The STM image on the (001) surface clearly revealed the atomic corrugation of the tetragonal lattice with an average spacing of 0.4 nm. while on the (110) surface the orthorhombic atomic lattice, corresponding to the Cu atoms of both CuO2 and CuO chain planes, was observed. The STS result on the (001) surface indicated the semiconducting nature of the terminating layer. As the tunneling tip came closer to the surface, however, the shape of the tunneling spectrum became more metallic and showed a superconducting energy gap, which seems to arise from the underlying superconducting layer. On the other hand, the tunneling spectra on the (110) surface indicated superconducting gap structures, independent of the tip-sample distance.

Notes: Abstract High-statistics (〉4 × 108 counts), room-temperature measurements of the electron-positron momentum density of La2−x Sr x CuO4 have been performed for samples with Sr concentrations of x=0.0, 0.1, 0.13, and 0.2. These spectra have been analyzed in conjunction with theoretical calculations of the electron-positron momentum density. The metallic samples show features consistent with the presence of a Fermi surface, but its evolution with increasing Sr concentration does not follow the predictions of band theory. These results may indicate the effects of electron-electron correlation on the electron momentum distribution in the Cu-O plane.

Notes: Abstract We have measured the temperature dependence of the ab-plane resistivity on Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy single crystals with high sensitivity. A clear resistivity drop was observed when a relatively low magnetic field was applied, which is attributed to the melting transition of the flux line lattice. Three crystals with different carrier doping level were investigated and the phase diagrams are determined from the resistivity measurements. It is also shown that the phase transition temperature depends strongly on the angle between the magnetic field and the crystallographic c-axis direction, reflecting the large anisotropy of Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy.
