Notes: Abstract We report on room temperature quasi-cw laser action in K5Nd(MoO4)4 at a wavelength of 1.067 μm. The crystal was pumped with the 5140 Å line of an argon ion laser. Due to thermal effects actual cw lasing was not possible. Chopping the pump light with a low duty cycle of 1∶1000 leads to quasi-cw laser action and stable output power. We have determined the fundamental laser parameters: threshold pump powerA T=15 mW, slope efficiency η=22%, and internal lossesL=2.5%. In order to explain the measured relaxation oscillations, diffusion of the excited 4f-excitons is considered. According to a recently developed theory, a diffusion constant ofD=2×10−6cm2/s explains the observed results.

Notes: Abstract We report, for the first time, on room temperature cw laser action of NdP5O14 and NdAl3(BO3)4 at 1.3 μm wavelength. The emission cross sections of the transition4 F 3/2→4 I 13/2 are 0.24·10−19 cm2 and 1.74·10−19 cm2, respectively. The lowest observed threshold was 45 mW and the slope efficiency was nearly 10%. The minimum threshold is expected to be about 5 mW of absorbed pump light for both materials.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated the basic spectroscopic properties of Cr3+-doped gallium garnets. Weak crystal fields (Dq/B=2.39–2.55) lead to broad4 T 2→4 A 2 fluorescence in the 700–950 nm range depending on the chemical composition of the crystals. At room temperature the4 T 2→4 A 2 transition is homogeneously broadened, whereas the 4 K spectra of the2 E→4 A 2 transition show inequivalent Cr3+ sites and inhomogeneous linewidths of 8 cm−1 in these laser crystals. From 300 to 4 K, the oscillator strength of the4 T 2→4 A 2 transition is reduced by a factor of about 0.6 due to the temperature dependent electron phonon coupling. The transition probability of the2 E→4 A 2 transition correlates with the energetic position of the4 T 2 level, which is admixed into the2 E level via spin-orbit coupling. The comparison of the2 E→4 A 2 phonon sideband structure in garnets of different chemical compositions allows the assignment of some peaks to GaO4-tetrahedron modes of the garnet structure.

Notes: Abstract We report on room-temperature cw laser action of Er3+: Yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) and Er3+: Yttrium-gallium-garnet (YGG) crystals at 1.64 μm. The laser operates from the metastable4 I 13/2 manifold into an upper Stark level of the4 I 15/2 ground-state manifold of Er3+. Due to reabsorption losses, the Er3+ concentration of the laser crystals must be low. Laser pumping at a wavelength of 647.1 nm yields lowest thresholds around 30 mW and slope efficiencies up to 12.7% for Er:YAG. Laser operation in Er:YGG is achieved with higher thresholds of about 200 mW and smaller slope efficiencies of 0.9%. The effective emission cross section in YAG is estimated to be σe≈5×10−21 cm2.

Notes: Abstract Room-temperature cw lasing at 1.061 μm has been obtained in Cr,Nd: GdScGa-garnet. Threshold powers as low as 7 mW and slope efficiencies up to 41% have been measured. Cross pumping of Nd3+ via Cr3+ is nearly as efficient as direct pumping. Time-resolved measurements of the transfer rate yield a transfer efficiency of 0.86 and an average transfer time of 17 μs. An improvement in pulsed broad band pumping can also be expected.
