Notizen: Abstract   The reported prevalence of type 2 diabetes among the Kuwaiti population varied from one source to another. This study was undertaken to define the magnitude of the problem and to suggest plans for future diabetic care. All type 2 Kuwaiti diabetic subjects registered and continuing to attend regularly in two health areas Mubarak Health Area (MHA) and Farwania Health Area (FHA)] were selected for the study. There were 3222 in MHA and 5114 in FHA among the Kuwaiti population aged 20 years and above, accounting for a total crude prevalance of 7.6% in both health areas and for a prevalence rate of 5.6% in MHA and 10.0% in FHA. The age-specific prevalence of type 2 diabetes in both areas combined rose from 2.639 per 100 population in the age group 20–39 years to 15.350% and 26.252% in the age groups 40–59 and 60 and above, respectively. The female to male ratio was 1.7, 1.6, 1.1, respectively, in MHA and 1.7, 2.0, 0.9 in FHA for the age groups 20–39, 40–59, and 60 and above. This study shows that type 2 diabetes is a major public health problem in Kuwait, with a female preponderance. Obesity is a characteristic feature of the population studied, with a mean body mass index of 31.8±6.3 and 28.5±5.1 in women and men, respectively. A positive family history of diabetes mellitus was reported in 63% of the diabetic subjects. There is a need to standardize methods of reporting and to plan a national screening survey.

Notizen: Abstract The spectral resolution of phase space representations of the Galilei group is achieved by deriving all possible decompositions into irreducible representations corresponding to reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. Spectral syntheses in terms of eigenfunction expansions, as well as in terms of continuous resolutions of the identity, are achieved. For the latter, the existence, uniqueness and other basic properties of resolution generators are established. This is shown to lead to systems of covariance related to measurements of stochastic phase space values performed with extended quantum test particles, whose proper wavefunctions are the aforementioned resolution generators.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper we review the mathematical methods and problems that are specific to the programme of stochastic quantum mechanics and quantum spacetime. The physical origin of these problems is explained, and then the mathematical models are developed. Three notions emerge as central to the programme: positive operator-valued (POV) measures on a Hilbert space, reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, and fibre bundle formulations of quantum geometries. A close connection between the first two notions is shown to exist, which provides a natural setting for introducing a fibration on the associated overcomplete family of vectors. The introduction of group covariance leads to an extended version of harmonic analysis on phase space. It also yields a theory of induced group representations, which extends the results of Mackey on imprimitivity systems for locally compact groups to the more general case of systems of covariance. Quantum geometries emerge as fibre bundles whose base spaces are manifolds of mean stochastic locations for quantum test particles (i.e., spacetime excitons) that display a phase space structure, and whose fibres and structure groups contain, respectively, the aforementioned overcomplete families of vectors and unitary group representations of phase space systems of covariance.

Notizen: Summary Crystalline B-granules of grass-snake islets of Langerhans have been shown to possess the shape of rhombic dodecahedra (a ≈ 11 nm, cubic body-centered lattice). Three-dimensional reconstructions from serial sections, optical diffractometry and comparison with crystal models were the techniques utilized. The significance of crystalline B-granules is discussed.

Notizen: Summary Due to a decided lack in the literature of reports on the microangioarchitecture of the pancreas of snakes, an analysis was performed in three different species of two different ophidian families with the use of cast preparations and complementary scanning electron microscopy. The vascular architecture reflects the lobular substructure of the pancreas; the organ is supplied by branches of the superior mesentric artery. Coiled lobular arteries and arterioles continue into a meshwork of capillaries. Dilated capillaries of the endocrine portion of the pancreas are an integral component of this fine capillary network. A few very small capillaries establish a connection between the endocrine and the exocrine pancreas. The other capillaries drain into venules, which ultimately join their respective veins. No interspecific differences were noted in the vascularization of the pancreas of the three ophidian species examined. The present results suggest the existence of arterio-venous anastomoses and speak against the presence of a portal system, but establish a feed-forward capillary connection from the endocrine to the exocrine component of the ophidian pancreas.
