Notes: Abstract The first use of an external cavity diode-laser light source in combination with a photoacoustic detector for high-sensitivity gas detection is described. This combined system is applicable for detecting gases with absorption coefficients as low as 5 x 10−8 cm−1 by operating the photoacoustic cell in an intracavity mode. Measurements were made on the 1.13 μm absorption lines of water vapour. For quantitative measurements, it was found to be necessary to introduce a reference cell into the system.

Description / Table of Contents: Contributions to the Chemistry of Silicon and Germanium. XL. The Formation of Alkali Metal Silanyls, MSinH2n+1 (M = Na, K) - A New Method for the Formation of Silicon-Silicon Bonds from SiH4 and Sodium or PotassiumThe reaction of monosilane with activated sodium or potassium was studied under various conditions. With sodium a solution containing a mixture of sodium silanyls, NaSinH2n+1 (n = 1-4), was obtained in each case. However, with potassium always KSiH3 was isolated as described earlier [2, 3]. Only the reaction of KSiH3 with an excess of SiH4 yielded potassium silanyls, KSinH2n+1 (n = 1-4), analogous to the sodium compounds. All derivatives were indirectly characterized by gaschromatographic investigation of their reaction products with benzyl chloride, by alkalimetric titration after hydrolysis, and directly by their 1H NMR spectra. It could be shown, that silicon-silicon bonds may be built up from SiH4 by means of sodium or potassium.
